Beavers bring in the New Year with a win over Northland College

Bemidji State keeps its winning streak alive after 91-82 victory over Northland

BEMIDJI, Minn. – The Bemidji State University Men's Basketball team kept its winning streak alive after defeating Northland College 91-82 on Monday night at the BSU Gymnasium. John Sutherland in back-to-back games recorded a double-double with 16 points and 15 rebounds.

Sutherland in his last three games has put up 10+ points in the first half and tonight recorded eight rebounds in the first 20 minutes of play. Despite only putting up three points in the second half he snagged seven more rebounds to compete his second double-double in as many games. The last time 15 rebounds were recorded was on Feb. 19, 2022 Derek Thompson against St. Cloud State University.

The Lumberjacks (3-10, 1-1 UMAC) started the game hot going on a seven-point run to earn their largest lead of six points. The Beavers cut the lead down and took their own lead after Dalton Albrecht connected on a three. BSU found a groove and went on a 12-point run capped off by a driving layup from Brayden Williams. Northland hung right with Bemidji State a majority of its points coming from three pointers. NC went 8-for-16 in the first half from deep. Going into half BSU was up 52-38. In the second half Northland stepped away from the deep ball and found success in the paint scoring 22 points and cut the Beavers' lead to nine. BSU was able to maintain its lead with last minute free throws to extend its winning streak to four.

Leading the scoring for the Beavers was Albrecht with 23 points trying his career high set last Saturday against Minot State University. Albrecht shot 8-for-11 from the field, 2-for-3 from three and 5-for-6 from the free throw line. Behind him was Mohamed Kone with 22 points, coming from two layups, four three-pointers and six free throws. Also breaking into double digits were Sutherland and RJ Smith with 16 and 13 points respectively. In the first half Kone dished out five assists leading the team in assists on the night with six in total.

Sutherland had a monster night on the boards grabbing 15 rebounds seven on the offensive glass. Down low in the paint he was also able to draw six fouls. Kone, was one rebound shy of recording his first double-double of the season but the nine set a new season high. Rounding out the top three in rebounding was Brayden Williams with six on the night.
