WAYNE, Neb. – The Bemidji State University Men's Basketball team's three-game winning streak was snapped by Wayne State College following a 68-53 defeat on Friday evening in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference play in Wayne, Neb.
John Sutherland recorded a double-double in back-to-back games with 14 points and 12 rebounds.
Wayne State (13-6, 8-5 NSIC) started the game off with six unanswered points. The Beavers' (12-7, 7-6 NSIC) first basket came at 16:24 with a
RJ Smith layup. BSU were able to pull ahead 11-10 when Sutherland nailed a three-pointer.
Mohamed Kone put the lead to three with a pair of made free throws. The lead did not last long, as just over three minutes later, the Wildcats used a 6-0 spurt to reclaim the advantage at 16-13 near the eight-minute mark of the opening half. After some exchanged baskets, the Beavers were held to 21 points as WSC ended the final 3:13 before the break on a 10-2 run for the 35-21 lead at halftime.
Dalton Albrecht started the scoring off in the second half for BSU with a layup assisted by Kone. Wayne State kept Bemidji State at a 15-point deficit for a majority of the half with its largest lead at 20 at 47-27 just over seven minutes into the half. With eight minutes left in the game, Sutherland made a free throw to cut WSC's lead to 13, but that was the closest BSU would get the rest of the way.
Daniel Ijadimbola finished the scoring in the game with a layup to provide the final margin of 68-53 in favor of Wayne State.
Sutherland recorded his second double-double in as many games by leading the Beavers in scoring and rebounds with 14 points and 12 rebounds. This is Sutherland's seventh double-double of the season. He went 6-11 from the field and added both a three-pointer and free throw in 39 minutes. Kone added 13 points, along with six rebounds and three assists. Smith was close to double-figures in scoring adding nine points on 4-8 shooting. The Beavers struggled at the free throw line going 7-for-13 but, Kone went a perfect 4-for-4. BSU finished the game making 21-52 (40.4) from the field and couldn't get the long ball going making 4-19 (21.1).
Albrecht finished behind Sutherland's 12 rebounds with seven, three coming on the offensive glass. Kone grabbed six boards on the night, third for the Beavers. Smith recorded the sole block for Bemidji State. The Beavers came away with one take away in the game in result of an Albrecht steal.
Justin Eagins and Jordan Janssen powered the Wildcats' attack as the duo each scored 16 points. WSC made 29-63 (46) from the field, 6-15 (40) from three and took just nine free throws, connecting on four (44.4).
The Beavers look to bounce back tomorrow (Saturday) as they travel to Sioux Falls, S.D., to take on Augustana University at 3:30 p.m. The Vikings claimed the 80-62 win on Friday night against Minnesota Crookston.
