BEMIDJI, Minn. – The Bemidji State University Women's Basketball team looks to keep momentum after its first Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference win as it travels to Upper Iowa University and Winona State University this weekend. The Beavers (4-8, 1-7 NSIC) starts the week with a 5:30 p.m., tip-off in Fayette, Iowa on Friday, followed by a 3:30 p.m. start time in Winona, Minn., Saturday.
The Series vs Upper Iowa
- Bemidji State leads the all-time series against Upper Iowa, 17-6.
- The Beavers and Peacocks last met Jan. 17, 2020, a 74-72 win by BSU in Fayette, Iowa.
- Bemidji State leads the series when played in Fayette, 7-4.
- Bemidji State and Upper Iowa first met Dec. 28, 2004, a 73-58 win for BSU.
The Series vs Winona State
- Bemidji State leads the all-time series against Winona State, 45-36.
- The Beavers and Warriors last met Feb. 23, 2022, a 63-51 win by BSU in Bemidji, Minn.
- BSU leads the series when played in Winona, 21-13.
- Bemidji State and Winona State first met Feb. 11, 1973, 41-37 win for BSU.
Fast Break Bemidji State
- The Beavers earned their first NSIC victory over Minot State University with a dominant performance on New Year's Eve winning 71-58. However, BSU fell to University of Mary 52-84 the day before.
- Maddie Schires, Alyssa Hill and Trinity Yoder all reached double figures in both games last weekend. Schires led the Beavers with a career high 20 points against MSU.
- Hill recorded her second double-double of the season with 16 points and 11 rebounds against Minot State and finished with eight rebounds and 10 points against Mary.
- BSU had its second-best night of shooting converting on 45.6% on its shots. Schires and Hill helped that average both going 5-for-8.
- In the game hosting MSU, BSU made seven three's tying its second-best total of the season. Schires was responsible for five of the shots made.
- Bemidji State is averaging 59.0 points per game with Yoder leading the team with 14.5 ppg. The Beavers rank 15th in points per game in the NSIC and Yoder is 13th in the conference.
- Hill has been making up ground on the Beavers' rebound leader Sam Pogatchnik. Pogatchnik leads BSU with 83 rebounds and Hill is second with 69. The duo rank ninth and 13th in the NSIC, respectively.
- Yoder set up eight baskets in the win over Minot State increasing her season assist total to 48, leading the Beavers and third in the conference.
- Bemidji State is 15th in the NSIC in scoring offense with 59.0 ppg and 12th in scoring defense allowing 67.9 ppg.
- BSU is 16th in field goal percentage (.374) and 14th in 3-point field goal percentage (.287).
- Bemidji State moved up the ranks to fifth in the conference with 3.67 blocked shots per game with Hill leading the team with eight.
- The Beavers fell to 13th in turnovers averaging 17.6 per game and 15th in assist to turnover ratio.
Scouting Upper Iowa
- Head Coach Justin Maass starts his first season with the Peacocks (5-8).
- Upper Iowa (5-8, 1-7 NSIC) defeated Winona State 70-63 snapping an eight-game losing streak.
- UIU averages 66.7 points per game shooting 39.6% from the field and 32.0% from behind the arc.
- Senior guard Katie Tornstrom was named NSIC Player of the Week of the South Division after dropping 30 points in the win over WSU.
Scouting Winona State
- Head Coach Ana Wurtz starts her first season with the Warriors (8-6).
- WSU (8-6, 2-6 NSIC) fell to Upper Iowa 63-70 in the last game of the 2022 calendar year.
- Winona State averages 64.1 points per game shooting 44.4% from the field and 35.3% from behind the arc.
- Junior forward Alex Dornfeld leads the Warriors 176 points and 127 rebounds. Dornfeld is first in the NSIC averaging 9.1 rebounds per game.
