Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Winona State's strong second and third quarters lifts Warriors over Beavers

Beavers led after one quarter, but fall 76-63 to Warriors

WINONA, Minn. – The Bemidji State University Women's Basketball team led after the first quarter, but after two 21-point quarters from Winona State University (9-7, 3-7 NSIC), the Beavers (4-10, 1-9 NSIC) could not catch up, falling 76-63 in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference play in Winona, Minn., Saturday afternoon. Sam Pogatchnik went back-to-back games with 18 points to lead BSU for her most points in one weekend.

It took the Beavers two minutes to land on the score board with a Trinity Yoder driving layup. BSU continued to find success in the paint with the next eight points coming inside. Pogatchnik gave the Beavers their first lead at 16-13 with back-to-back threes. Ending the first quarter, Bemidji State held the 18-15 advantage. Isabel Majewski started the second quarter scoring for BSU by responding to a Warriors three with a three of her own to push the Beavers back in front at 21-19. A deep two from Majewski midway through the second quarter equaled the largest lead of the opening half for BSU of four. To end the half, the Warriors went on a six-point run to stretch the lead to a 36-29 advantage going to the break. Pogatchnik led BSU in the first half with 10 points and five rebounds.

Starting the second half, the Warriors went on a quick 4-0 spurt to push their lead into double-digits at 40-29. Coming out of an early time out, Alyssa Hill cut to the hoop for a layup cashing in on an assist dished out by Yoder and a Pogatchnik three cut the lead to six. The Warriors continued their third quarter tear coming out of the media timeout and went up 57-42 at the end of the quarter. WSU picked up right where it left off in the final quarter going on a seven-point run, ended by an Ella Giorgi layup assisted by Yoder. The Beavers tried to climb back into the game, but the eventual 22-point lead early in the fourth quarter was too much for BSU.

For the third time this season, Pogatchnik led the scoring for BSU with her 18 points, while shooting 7-for-11 from the field, 3-for-7 from three and 1-for-2 from the free throw line. Majewski was second on the team setting a new career-high with 13 points and Hill rounded out the top-three with 12. While Yoder was held to a season-low of six points, she helped set up the scoring with a game-high nine assists.

In a low rebounding game, the Warriors finished ahead of the Beavers at 32-24, with two student-athletes from WSU finishing with 10-plus rebounds. Both went for double-doubles with Alex Dornfeld recording 15 points and 10 rebounds, while Ava Sergio added 13 points and 12 rebounds. Pogatchnik led the team collecting six rebounds, with five coming in the first half of play. Hill snagged four for the second-most for BSU and Yoder, Giorgi and Brooke Theis rounded out the top-five with three apiece. Theis was the sole Beaver who recorded a block in the game.

The Beavers will return home to the BSU Gymnasium as they host Concordia University-St. Paul and Minnesota State University, Mankato on Jan. 13-14. BSU starts the weekend action with CSP Friday with a 5:50 p.m. start time.
