MADISON, Wis. – Freshman
Hailey Armstrong tied the game in the first period for the Bemidji State University Women's Hockey team but No. 1 University of Wisconsin fired off seven unanswered goals to complete the Western Collegiate Hockey Association series sweep by a score of 8-1 Saturday afternoon in LaBahn Arena.
Â
Armstrong netted her team-leading fifth goal of the season but the Beavers had no answer for the nation's top scoring offense in the second and third periods to fall to 0-7-1 (0-4-0 WCHA) on the season.
Â
Wisconsin (8-0-0, 4-0-0 WCHA) wasted little time to get on the scoreboard first and just 42 seconds after the opening puck drop with a goal from Britta Curl.
Â
The Beavers then scored the game-tying goal with 5:01 left in the frame when Armstrong one-timed a puck that deflected out to the slot off a
Taylor Nelson shot.
Â
Â
The tie game lasted just 2:35 as Wisconsin's Maddi Wheeler retook the lead just before the period's end.
Â
Wheeler scored her second of the game 6:38 into the second period that began a wave of Badger goals. Wisconsin would go on to score six goals in the middle frame from the sticks of Kirsten Simms (2), Cassie Hall and Kelly Gorbatenko. The Badgers would make it 8-1 in the third period with a late goal from Vivian Jungels.
Â
In her first action between the pipes for the Beavers, junior Emerald Kelly stopped 26-of-33 shots before freshman
Eva Filippova came in at the start of the third period and stopped six-of-seven shots.
Â
Bemidji State will now return home to begin a six-game homestand beginning with hosting University of Minnesota Duluth at Sanford Center Oct. 27-28. The Beavers will attempt to bring awareness to Organ Donation in Saturday's series finale with their Organ Donation Awareness game.
