BEMIDJI, Minn. – (RV) Michigan Technological University used two first-period goals to down the Bemidji State University Men's Hockey team Friday night in their Central Collegiate Hockey Association series opener at Sanford Center.
The Huskies (3-4-3, 1-0-0 CCHA) scored two goals 1:32 apart midway through the first period to take a 2-0 lead over the Beavers (3-6-0, 2-3-0 CCHA) before the first intermission.
The Beavers did respond before the period's end however, when fifth-year senior
Kyle Looft fired a quick shot from the right wall that caught Husky goaltender Blake Pietila off guard to pull the Beavers within one with 2:27 remaining in the first period.
Bemidji State would remain within one after the first horn but midway through the second period, the Huskies extended their lead back to two.
Michigan Tech carried the 3-1 lead into the third period but a power-play goal from freshman Liam Engström 4:57 into the final frame breathed new life into the Beavers with just over 15 minutes remaining.
However, the Beavers couldn't find the equalizer in time and with 14 seconds left, Michigan Tech iced the game with an empty-net goal.
Looft finished the game with a goal and assist for his second multi-point effort of the season.
The Huskies were led by Arvid Caderoth who posted a four-point effort scoring two goals and assisted on two others.
Senior
Gavin Enright started his fourth consecutive game and turned aside 26-of-29 shots but falls to 3-4-0 on the season.
Bemidji State earned five power plays in the game going 1-for-5 with the man advantage while its penalty kill denied the Huskies on two of their three chances.
The Beavers will attempt at the series split tomorrow evening for game two with puck drop scheduled for 6:07 p.m.
