Mayville State gets past Beavers

BEMIDJI, Minn. – The Bemidji State University Women's Basketball team held the early lead after the first quarter before Mayville State used a big second quarter on their way to claiming the 63-52 win over the Beavers on Monday inside the BSU gym.

Bemidji State (1-1) got a big game from Alyssa Hill tallying 19 points and six rebounds. Sydney White and Alayna Suprenand each added eight points. White was close to a double-double with eight rebounds. Suprenand added a team-high four assists.

White opened the scoring for the Beavers just over a minute in with a layup. Hill and Erin Barrette then added back-to-back layups to stretch the advantage to 6-0. Mayville State (4-1) quickly answered with the next six points to tie the game at the 4:11 mark of the opening quarter.

Bemidji State responded with the next nine points to move out to their biggest lead of the game at 15-6. White started the run with a layup. Ashlynne Gunther tallied a jumper and after two from the line by White, Tiertyn Plasch closed the run with a triple at the 2:00 mark. The Comets capped the final two minutes on a 4-0 run leaving BSU with the 15-10 lead.

Rachel Koenig and Sam Pogatchnik tallied baskets early in the second quarter to keep the lead at seven. Mayville State then controlled the rest of the second quarter closing the first half on a 20-4 run to take the 32-23 lead into halftime.

Bemidji State started the second stanza strong with Hill accounting for the first five points to trim the deficit back to four. After Mayville State had the lead stretched back out to 11, BSU pushed back to within seven late in the quarter. Mayville State, just like the end of the second quarter, finished strong over the final two minutes outscoring BSU 8-0 to take the 49-34 advantage.

BSU tried to get back into it late in the fourth quarter. Hill hit a pair of layups and Suprenand added a free throw to cut the deficit to nine, but there wasn't enough time for a comeback with Mayville State claiming the 63-52 victory.
