Beavers complete second straight Saturday night comeback to split series with Mavericks

BSU Men’s Hockey scores three in the third period to rally and defeat Minnesota State 7-6

MANKATO, Minn. – Another crazy comeback took place Saturday night as the Bemidji State University Men's Hockey team stormed back to score three goals in third period to defeat Minnesota State University, Mankato 7-6 at Mayo Clinic HSEC in their Central Collegiate Hockey Association series finale.

Bemidji State scored the first two goals of the game 3:07 after the opening face-off but Minnesota State answered by scoring five unanswered goals before the 13-minute mark. The Beavers responded by scoring the next two goals to make it 5-4 but the Mavericks answered once again with a goal with 3:46 to play in the second to make it 6-4.

The Beavers then went on another crazy run in the third period mimicking last weekend's four-goal comeback against Michigan Technological University. Bemidji State scored three unanswered goals within 1:48 of each other to rally back and defeat the Mavericks 7-6.

BSU got the start it desired after falling 5-1 the night before by scoring the first two goals of the game 3:07 into the first period. Jere Vaisanen got things going for the Beavers with his first goal of the season 2:34 into the game.

Just 33 seconds later Austin Jouppi made it 2-0 with his first goal of the season.

Just 1:10 went by before the Mavericks responded with their first goal that began a five-goal scoring run that spanned 8:38.

The Beavers stopped the scoring run with 6:53 left before the first period's end when Jake McLean forced a turnover behind the Mavericks' net and scored his third goal of the season.

The first period ended with the Beavers trailing 5-3 and 8:27 into the second period, Eric Pohlkamp pulled the Beavers within one with a power-play goal.

However, the Mavericks answered with a power-play goal of their own with just 3:46 left in the middle frame to retake a two-goal lead.

Minnesota State played 17:38 with the two-goal lead but Jackson Jutting pulled the Beavers back within one with 6:02 left in the third period to give the Beavers life again.

The goal did just that as 50 seconds later, Lleyton Roed tied the game at 6-6 with his team-leading eighth goal of the season.

Bemidji State rode that momentum and scored the go-ahead goal just 58 seconds later when Jutting scored his second of the game off a back-door pass from Alexander Lundman.

Kyle Looft led the Beavers recording three assists for his third three-point effort of the season while Jutting (2g), Eric Martin (2a), Kirklan Irey (2a), Lundman (2a) and Lleyton Roed (1g-1a) each had two points. A total of 12 Beavers recorded a point with six different goal scorers.

The seven goals scored is the most goals for the Beavers since Feb. 25, 2023 against University of St. Thomas.

Freshman Raythan Robbins earned his first start of his career making five saves in 12:55 of action while Gavin Enright replaced him and played the remaining 47:05 stopping 16-of-17 shots to earn his fourth victory of the season.

Bemidji State improves to 5-7-0 on the season and 4-4-0 in conference play and sit first in the CCHA standings with 13 points.

The Beavers will take a break from conference play next weekend and travel to Grand Forks, N.D., to take on No. 4 University of North Dakota, Nov. 24-25.
