Game Recap: Men's Ice Hockey |

(RV) Beavers respond with 6-2 victory over Ferris State Saturday night

BSU Men’s Hockey uses three-goal second period to split series with Bulldogs

BIG RAPIDS, Mich. – After suffering bitter defeat last night, the (RV) Bemidji State University Men's Hockey team responded Saturday night by matching its season-high goal total of six and downed Ferris State University 6-2 to salvage the Central Collegiate Hockey Association series split.

The Beavers (12-13-5, 10-9-3 CCHA) earned three points in the league standings and regained fourth and home ice positioning over the Bulldogs with four games remaining.

Bemidji State wasted no time in the game and while on a power play freshman Lleyton Roed scored his 10th goal of the season just 4:55 after the opening puck drop after batting home a loose rebound.

He became the first freshman at BSU to reach double-digits in goal scoring since Owen Sillinger totaled 10 goals in 2018-19.

The Beavers extended their lead just before the period's end when Elias Rosén took a hard slap shot from a Roed drop pass that Bulldog goaltender Noah Giesbrecht had little time to react to and scored his third goal of the season.

The Beavers headed into the locker-room for the first intermission with the two-goal lead but just 2:44 into the middle frame, Ferris State responded and pulled within one of BSU when Travis Shoudy found the back of the net. The score remained close for most of the period until Jackson Jutting tipped home an Adam Flammang shot while on another Beaver power play to return the Beavers' lead to two with just 5:02 remaining in the period.

The goal started a wave of Beaver goals as the Beavers would go on to score tow more goals over the span of the next 1:36. Sophomore Alexander Lundman followed Jutting's goal just 1:04 after with his ninth goal of the season after a nice feed from freshman Kirklan Irey.

Just 32 seconds later, Bemidji State extended its lead to 5-1 when fifth-year senior Kaden Pickering scored his fourth as a Beaver to cap-off the Beavers' scoring streak in the period.

Ferris State ended the Beavers' scoring run with a power-play goal 5:18 into the third period. The goal wouldn't be enough and with 50 seconds remaining, BSU sealed the victory when Aaron Myers scored his third goal of the season with an assist to Logan Acheson who recorded his first collegiate point on the play.

Bemidji State finished the game 2-for-2 while on the power play while its penalty kill held the Bulldogs to just the lone goal on four chances.

BSU out-shot Ferris State 29-21 in the game with sophomore Mattias Sholl stopping 19-of-21 shots to earn his ninth win of the season and improve to 9-9-3.

Bemidji State now makes the long trip home and host its final home series of the regular season next weekend when they welcome rival Minnesota State University, Mankato to Sanford Center. The Beavers and Mavericks will clash for a two-game league series beginning Friday, Feb. 17 at 7:07 p.m.
