Bemidji State falls in overtime versus MSU Moorhead on Senior Night

Hill recorded a career-high 22 points in loss to Dragons

BEMIDJI, Minn. – The Bemidji State University Women's Basketball team fell in overtime against Minnesota State University, Moorhead 68-60 in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference play Saturday night in the BSU Gymnasium. Alyssa Hill recorded her fourth double-double of the season with career-highs of 22 points and 13 rebounds.

Bemidji State falls to 7-17 on the season and 4-16 in the NSIC, while MSU Moorhead improves to 13-11 overall and 10-10 in the conference. The Dragons swept the Beavers this season scoring 68 points in both contests. Before the game, the Beavers honored their five seniors in Trinity Yoder, Rumer Flatness, Maddie Schires, Tori Bott and Shea Oman.

On Senior Night, Flatness got her first career start and Bemidji State's first basket with a three-pointer to take a 3-1 lead. The Beavers only saw the lead for 20 seconds as the Dragons responded with a seven-point run. Yoder and Hill added layups to bring BSU to within three at the end of the opening quarter, trailing just 10-7.

MSUM started the second quarter with a jumper and a triple to move out to their largest lead of eight, 15-7. Sam Pogatchnik and Yoder stopped the lead from getting too big by each knocking down a jumper. With 2:08 left in the quarter, the Dragons pulled in front by seven before a storm of Beaver baskets helped even the score. Pogatchnik hit a triple and after a steal and fastbreak layup from Brooke Theis, Yoder capped the 7-0 scoring run with a layup to send the game into halftime all tied at 20.

Yoder led the scoring in the first half with seven points and tallied three rebounds. Rachel Koenig was sending back shots recording three of Bemidji State's six blocks in the first two quarters. The Beavers finished the half shooting 8-for-25 (32.0%) from the floor, 2-for-13 from three and Pogatchnik converted both free throws for BSU.

MSU Moorhead made its first two shots of the second half, but Yoder kept the game close knocking down a pair of free throws and a layup on consecutive possessions. A fast break layup by Hill assisted by Erin Barrette tied the game at 28 near the midway point of the third quarter. Both teams traded baskets until Yoder capitalized on a three-point play to put BSU back on top with two seconds left in the quarter. Mariah McKeever rushed down the court for MSUM and heaved a long range three that went down to move the Dragons back in front at 39-37 entering the fourth quarter.

MSU Moorhead held a lead of six for a majority of the final quarter. Yoder made a jumper to cut the lead to three with just under five minutes to play. Just over a minute later, a Hill layup brought the Beavers to within two at 47-45. Yoder knotted the game up at 47 with another jumper entering the final three minutes. The Dragons found themselves up three in the final seconds. Isabel Majewski found the perfect time to get on the score sheet making a three-pointer with 13 seconds to play in regulation. McKeever could not covert on a midrange jumper as the buzzer sounded and the game went to overtime.

After only holding the lead for 23 seconds entering overtime, the Beavers got on the board first with another Hill layup. Olivia Skibiel put MSUM back on top after making two free throws and followed it up with a three-pointer to give the Dragons a five-point advantage. The Beavers could not make one last push with the Dragons outscoring BSU 12-4 in the extra session to claim the 68-60 victory.

After being held to two points in the first half, Hill exploded for a career-high 22 points to lead the Beavers in scoring. She went 10-for-15 from the field and 2-for-4 from the free throw line. Yoder was right behind Hill with 21 points and it's the second time the pair finished with over 20 points. Yoder also assisted on a game-high four baskets.

MSU Moorhead out-rebounded Bemidji State 50-36 with six student-athletes recording five or more rebounds. Hill grabbed a career-high 13 rebounds for the game-high along with recording her fourth double-double. Yoder and Pogatchnik rounded out the top-three with seven and six, respectively. The Beavers had a season-high of nine blocks with Koenig recording four.
