Bemidji State takes on Wayne State in Quarterfinals of the NSIC Men’s Basketball Tournament Saturday

Beavers return to Sanford Pentagon for the first time since 2018-19

BEMIDJI, Minn. – The fourth-seeded Bemidji State University Men's Basketball team continues to the quarterfinals in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Men's Basketball Tournament and will take on Wayne State College at the Sanford Pentagon in Sioux Falls, S.D. The Beavers face-off against the Wildcats at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, the second game of the day, after winter weather altered the original schedule.

The Series vs Wayne State
·         Wayne State leads the all-time series against Bemidji State, 24-30.
·         The Beavers and Wildcats last met Jan. 20, 2023, earlier this season, with a 68-53 win by WSC in Wayne, Neb.
·         This is the second meeting at a neutral location between these teams with WSC winning the first. Bemidji State is 2-2 in postseason meetings with Wayne State.
·         BSU and WSC first met Dec. 30, 1973, with a 71-58 win by the Beavers.
 
 
Fast Break Bemidji State
  • The Beavers advanced to the quarterfinals after defeating Augustana University 92-88 Wednesday night at the BSU Gymnasium.    
  • Bemidji State earned its 19th win of the season, the fifth most in program history. BSU has a record of 19-10 overall and 13-9 in the NSIC.
  • John Sutherland and Mohamed Kone were named to the All-NSIC Teams. Sutherland was listed to the First Team and Kone on the Second Team. Sutherland is the first BSU student-athlete to earn the award in 10 seasons.
  • The Beavers had their second-best shooting performance of the season against Augustana converting on 60.8% of their shots from the field and 50.0% from behind the arc.
  • Bemidji State is 11-2 when making 10 or more three pointers in a game. The most BSU has scored in a game was 17 in its first game of the season where five student-athletes did not miss a three pointer.
  • In the previous three games RJ Smith has converted on eight shots from behind the arc only missing one.
  • All five starters finished in double figures in the win over the Vikings, Sutherland recorded a career high 28 points after shooting 12-15 (80%) from the field.
  • Sutherland has scored a team high 530 points, the 10th most in a season in program history.
  • John Sutherland pulled in nine rebounds on the Wednesday improving to 233 on the season, seventh best in program history. He is only four rebounds away from cracking into the top-five.
  • The Beavers shot over 50% in 16 games this season with their season best shooting performance coming against SCSU last weekend at 60.7%. Bemidji State ranks 19th in Division II converting on 49.8% on the season.
  • Sutherland is leading the conference shooting 59.2% from the floor and is 33rd in the nation.
  • Bemidji State averages 79.4 points per game, fourth best in the conference and allow 77.2 ppg, 12th in the NSIC.
  • The Beavers are 15th in turnovers and seventh in assist to turnover ratio with a 1.19 ratio.
  
Scouting Wayne State
  • Head Coach Jeff Kaminsky is in his seventh season with the Wildcats (98-97) and in his 35th season coaching with a record of 550-464
  • WSC (18-10, 13-9 NSIC) earned a first round bye in the NSIC Tournament after clinching the NSIC South Division title.
  • Wayne State averages 74.9 points per game shooting 45.3% from the field and 37.2% from behind the arc.
  • Fifth-year senior forward Jordan Janssen leads the Wildcats in points (556) and rebounds (225). Janssen is fourth in the conference averaging 20.6 points per game and has scored 10 or more points in every game this season. In the first meeting with BSU Janssen scored 16 points and grabbed five rebounds.
