BISMARCK, N.D. – The Bemidji State University Women's Basketball team's two-game winning streak comes to an end against the University of Mary Saturday evening falling 48-39 in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference play in Bismarck, N.D.
Trinity Yoder recorded her second double-double of the season with 11 points and 12 rebounds in the loss. Other players added big efforts as well.
Sam Pogatchnik was close to a double-double with nine rebounds and seven points, while
Alyssa Hill grabbed eight rebounds to go along with six points.
Bemidji State falls to 7-15 on the season and 4-14 in the NSIC, while Mary improves to 13-8 overall and 12-6 in the conference. The Beavers did well to control Mary's offense, limiting the Marauders to under 10 points in both quarters one and four. The Marauders sweep the Beavers on the season in the lowest scoring game of the 33-game series.
Bemidji State and Mary both started a little slow with an early score of 4-2 in favor of BSU in the first five minutes with the Marauders' only points coming off a pair of free throws. Yoder and
Rachel Koenig each tallied baskets in the early going for the Beavers. Addison Rozell made the first field goal for Mary with a three-pointer to give the Marauders their first lead at 5-4 with under four to play in the opening quarter. Hill made her first basket after grabbing five rebounds in the first quarter at the 2:16 mark to leave the deficit at one. Mary tallied a late layup to close the quarter with the slight 9-6 advantage.
Magen Zander of Mary started the scoring with a three, 24 seconds into the second quarter. The Marauders found their footing scoring seven points to the Beavers' two in the first three minutes of play. Coming out of an early time out,
Erin Barrette made a triple to cut the lead to three. Mary outscored the Beavers by eight the rest of the half to take the 27-16 halftime lead.
The third quarter was quiet for scoring, with Mary starting off with four quick points, but then that 4-0 run to start the second half would stand for a while. Yoder broke the run scoring halfway through the quarter hitting a free throw. Yoder ended up making five free throws in the quarter, around two from the charity stripe by Pogatchnik, but the Marauders outscored BSU 14-7 in the third to take the 41-23 lead into the final frame.
Pogatchnick continued the free throws early in the fourth quarter for the Beavers hitting a pair. Hill then added a layup just over two minutes into the frame off an assist by Yoder. It turned into a 7-0 run with
Isabel Majewski hitting a jumper and a three by Barrette trimmed the deficit to 12. Yoder was sent to the free throw line in the final minute and made both to pull the game within nine. Majewski then closed the scoring with a foul shot to leave Mary with the 48-39 victory.
For 39 minutes, no BSU student-athletes were in double-figures (the last time a game finished that way was Jan. 28, 2020 against University of Minnesota, Duluth) until Yoder was sent to the free throw line knocking down both for her 11
th point of game with 27 seconds to play. Pogatchnik scored seven points with four free throws and a triple. Barrette and Hill both finished behind Pogatchnik with six points and Majewski rounded out the top-five scorers with five.
In the low scoring affair, that meant many rebounds were up for grabs as the Beavers and Marauders snagged 39. Yoder led the Beavers with 12 rebounds contributing to her double-double. Pogatchnik and Hill were close in reaching double figures grabbing nine and eight rebounds, respectively. Yoder came away with three steals for a game-high. Pogatchnik and Hill recorded a block to continue the season block streak of all 22 games.
It was truly a defensive battle with BSU making just 11 field goals and three three-pointers, while making 14 free throws. Mary was held to 16 field goals, three three-pointers and 13 free throws.
