Beavers drop first game in Tucson against SMSU

BSU Baseball falls 10-2 to Southwest Minn. State

BEMIDJI, Minn. – The Bemidji State University Baseball team fell in its first game at the Tucson Invitational Tuesday evening to Southwest Minnesota State University, 10-2 in Tucson, Ariz. Junior Seth Goplen hit a solo home run for the Beavers (0-9) in the second inning.

The Mustangs (4-1) started the game with a three-run home run in the top of the first inning for an early three-run lead. Goplen's solo shot in the second brought the Beavers within two. After surrendering the three-run home run, sophomore Jacob Marx rallied to hold the Mustangs scoreless over the next three innings but SMSU broke through in the fifth with two more runs.

That started a scoring run for the Mustangs as they added another run in the sixth while adding four more in the seventh to bring their total to 10.

Bemidji State added a run in the bottom of the ninth when James Wirt hit a sacrifice fly but would fall short of the comeback to fall 10-2 in the non-conference matchup with the Mustangs.

Bemidji State finished the game with six hits including two from sophomore Zach Moritz while Goplen and Wirt drove in the lone BSU runs.

Marx pitched 4.2 innings and allowed five runs, three earned, off five hits and walked five while striking out a career-high six batters but earns his second loss (0-2) of the season. Christian Lindow came in to pitch 1.1 innings in relief allowing one run of three hits, Jake Matise pitched 0.2 innings allowed four runs off four hits AJ Gengler pitched 1.1 innings allowing just one hit, walking two and struck out two while Jesse Johnson pitched the final inning and allowed just one hit and struck out three.

Bemidji State will continue play at the Tucson Invitational tomorrow and will face Dakota Wesleyan University for a doubleheader beginning at 10:00 a.m. CT.
