BEMIDJI, Minn. – The Bemidji State University Softball team fell in two five-inning games to Minnesota State University, Mankato 8-0 and 9-0 in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference play Friday afternoon at Chet Anderson Stadium in Bemidji, Minn. The Beavers fall to 14-18 on the season and 3-7 in the NSIC.
The Mavericks (21-13, 10-6 NSIC) pulled away early with a five-run second inning in game one and the scoring did not stop there with Kylie Sullivan, Madi Newman and Sydney Nielsen all going deep in the fourth and fifth inning to go up 8-0. The Beavers did not have any luck at the plate with McKayla Armbruster (12-7) pitching a five-inning perfect game. In her perfect outing Armbruster stuck out five BSU batters.
Kyla Damerow (5-9) got the start for the Beavers going 1.2 innings, striking out two batters, giving up five hits and one earned run.
Abby Kessel pitched 2.2 innings and
Elle Hastings went the final two-thirds allowing no runs.
In game two, Minnesota State picked up where it left off with Sullivan hitting a home run on the second pitch of the game. Two batters later, Newman hit her second home run of the day to go up 3-0. The Mavericks piled on six more runs in the second inning capped off on Cheyenne Behrends scoring on a wild pitch.
Mariah Stevenson got the only Beavers hit on the day in the second with a single to the shortstop.
Emmarie Yeager reached base twice in the second game drawing two walks. Kacy Nickerson (3-4) pitched a scoreless four innings for MSU with two strikeouts, one walk and one hit allowed to earn the win.
Stella Dolan (8-7) started the game for BSU and pitched 1.1 innings with one strikeout. Damerow came in to relive Dolan in the second inning and finished out the game. After allowing two earned runs in the second, Damerow pitched a scoreless three innings allowing one hit.
The Beavers continue their home stretch of games on Sunday as they welcome Concordia University-St. Paul for a doubleheader at Chet Anderson Stadium beginning at 1 p.m.
