SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – The Bemidji State University Baseball team fell in both games of its doubleheader at Augustana University Sunday afternoon in Sioux Falls, S.D. The Beavers fell just short in game one losing 5-4 and then fell 11-0 in eight innings in game two.
Bemidji State now falls to 2-25 (1-11 NSIC) while the Vikings improve to 20-12 (9-3 NSIC).
The Beavers held an early 4-0 lead over the Vikings after the first inning of game one after freshman
Jackson Schaffer hit his first career home run and grand slam. BSU's bats fell silent after the four-run home run however, recording just one hit over the next six innings.
Augustana made it 4-2 in the second inning after two RBI base hits and then took a 5-4 lead in the sixth inning after a three-run inside the park home run that eventually proved to be the game-winning hit.
The Beavers' pitchers held the Vikings to just four hits in the game including
Will Lavin who pitched 4.2 innings allowing just two runs off three hits and struck out seven in the no decision effort.
Christian Lindow (0-1) was credited with the loss, his first of the season, after pitching one inning allowing three runs off one hit and struck out two.
Logan Barrick pitched 1.1 innings and didn't allow a run or hit following Lindow.
Schaffer paced the Beavers with two of the teams' four hits and finished 2-for-3 at the plate with four RBI and one run scored.
James Wirt and Barrick collected the other hits for BSU.
BSU's bats struggled in game two and were held to two hits by AU's Seth Miller.
Jack Munson and
Wyatt Hamann recorded each hit, both singles.
Freshman
Ethan Lung (0-2) pitched the first three innings and was credited for the loss after allowing the first two runs, one earned, off three hits and struck out two. He was replaced by
Lucas Pierce who pitched three innings and allowed two runs, one earned, off three hits and struck out two as well.
Beau Barry,
Sawyer Nendick and
Cam McRoberts each came in to pitch in the final two innings.
The Beavers and Vikings will close out their three-game series tomorrow afternoon for game three. First pitch is scheduled for noon at Ronken Field in Sioux Falls.
