Beavers close to split with Warriors but Winona State earns series sweep

BSU Baseball falls in both games at Winona State

WINONA, Minn. – The Bemidji State University Baseball team was one out away from a split with Winona State University but the Warriors rallied to earn a sweep of the Beavers in their Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference doubleheader Wednesday in Winona, Minn.

The Beavers (2-28, 1-14 NSIC) held a 2-0 lead in the seventh in game one against the Warriors (13-17, 9-6 NSIC) but WSU rallied to score five runs and eventually earned the 5-4 victory in seven innings. The Warriors then exploded for 16 runs off 16 hits to take game two 16-1 and the series sweep.

Senior Logan Barrick threw a gem through the first six innings for the Beavers holding the Warriors scoreless through six and allowed just one hit. After the Beavers' batters scored two runs off an error and sacrifice fly by freshman Jackson Schaffer, Barrick eyed the complete-game win and one-hitter.

However, the Warriors found their swings in the top of the seventh. With the bases loaded and two outs, WSU scored runs off a passed ball, two-RBI single and a Beaver error to take a 5-2 lead, their first of the day.

Sophomore Hunter Daymond reached by an error to lead things off in the bottom of the seventh and then junior Jack Munson homered to right center to pull the Beavers within one and breathe new life into the lineup.

The home run was his team-leading fourth of the season while drive driving in his team-leading 14th and 15th RBI.

Unfortunately, three consecutive outs by the Warriors defense ended the Beavers rally for the 5-4 loss.

Barrick (1-2) held the Warriors to five runs but all five were unearned and finished the game allowing three hits, three walks, hit two batters and struck out a season-high seven batters.

Munson led the Beavers at the plate recording three of the Beavers' five hits in the game and went 3-for-4 with a home run, two RBI and two runs scored. Isaiah Biehn (2B) and Daymond were the only other Beavers to record a hit while three drew walks and James Wirt was hit by a pitch.

The Beavers had no answer for the Warriors bats in game two as WSU scored 16 runs off 16 hits to run away with a 16-1 seven-inning victory.

Bemidji State totaled six hits in the game with Wirt and Ty Karger each recording two. Wirt drove in the Beavers' lone run in the game with an RBI single in the fifth inning.

He finished the game 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI while Karger went 2-for-2 with two singles and drew a walk. Schaffer and Zach Moritz each collected a hit for the Beavers. Biehn drew a walk and scored a run for the Beavers and paces the team with a 10-game reached base streak, the longest of the season.

Riley Bersaw (0-5) earned the loss on the mound and pitched 3.0 innings allowing seven runs, four earned, off seven hits, walked four and struck out four. Konrad Kisch, Beau Barry and AJ Gengler all came into pitch in relief with Gengler leading the relievers with 1.1 innings of scoreless baseball.

The Beavers continue play on the road will travel to Wayne State College in Wayne, Neb., in their next action for a three-game series against the Wildcats beginning Friday, April 7.
