Beavers drop doubleheader at Mary

BSU Baseball falls 13-1 and 24-2 in final road trip of 2023

BISMARCK, N.D. – The Bemidji State University Baseball team dropped both games of its final road doubleheader of the 2023 season Tuesday evening falling 13-1 and 24-2 in two seven-inning games at University of Mary in Bismarck, N.D.
 
With the losses, the Beavers fall to 2-43 and 1-29 in Northern Sun intercollegiate Conference play and now return home for their final home series of the season a three-game set with Minot State University Friday-Saturday at BSU Baseball Field.
 
Bemidji State fell down a 9-0 hole in the first three innings of game one and couldn't recover falling 13-1 to the Marauders in seven innings. The Beavers totaled six hits in the game and scored their lone run of the game when senior James Wirt and junior Jack Munson hit back-to-back doubles to lead-off the fourth inning.
 
Munson led the Beavers going 2-for-3 at the plate with the RBI double while Wirt, Hunter Daymond, Zach Listiak and Ty Karger each collected hits.
 
Konrad Kisch (0-2) started the game on the mound but got through just one inning and allowed nine runs off 10 hits and a walk before being replaced in the second inning by freshman Lucas Pierce. Pierce was effective over his three innings worked and allowed just one run off two hits and struck out a career-high six batters. He was replaced by Cam McRoberts in the fifth inning and allowed three runs off four hits, walked one and struck out two.
 
The Marauders once again got off to an early lead over the Beavers after BSU tied the game at two in the second inning. Mary then exploded for 22 unanswered runs from the bottom of the second to the end of the game to claim the 24-2 victory.
 
The Beavers totaled eight hits in game two and scored their two runs after Ty Karger hit a lead-off double and later Isaiah Biehn drew a walk when Daymond drove in both runners after a double to centerfield. Daymond led the Beavers collecting two hits in the game and drove in the two runs to finish 2-for-4 while Wirt, Munson, Derek Dolezal, Karger, Nick Ekstrum and Biehn each added hits.
 
Derek Hoffman (0-5) started game two and pitched two innings allowing eight runs (three earned) off five hits and walked two. Christian Turner came in to pitch the third inning and allowed five runs (two earned) off three hits while AJ Gengler, Jesse Johnson and Munson each pitched an inning.
 
Bemidji State will now look to end the season on a high note by hosting Minot State for its regular season series finale. The Beaver battle will begin Friday, May 5 with a doubleheader beginning at 1:30 p.m., followed by game three Saturday at Noon. Saturday's game will also be Senior Day for eight Beavers who will be honored following the game.
