Beavers bounce back with shootout victory Saturday night at Michigan Tech

BSU Men’s Hockey earns crucial two points in CCHA league standings

HOUGHTON, Mich. – The Bemidji State University Men's Hockey team bounced back from a Friday night loss to tie Michigan Technological University 2-2 but earned the shootout victory to secure the extra point in Central Collegiate Hockey Association standings Saturday night in Houghton, Mich.

The Beavers earned two points in the standings and hold the second spot with 27 points, three behind league-leader University of St. Thomas. BSU is now 9-14-1 on the season and 8-7-1 in conference play.

Junior Mattias Sholl stopped the second-most shots in his career and the third most shots by a league goaltender this season turning aside 46 of the 48 shots he faced as well as two-of-three attempts in the shootout.

Sophomore Kirklan Irey opened the scoring eight minutes into the first period after fellow sophomore Adam Flammang blocked a shot and created a two-on-one rush before passing the puck over to Irey who buried the puck for his fifth goal of the season.

The Beavers extended their lead to two before the period's end when sophomore Lleyton Roed scored a power-play goal with 2:20 to play in the opening frame.

The goal was Roed's 12th of the season, tied for the third most in the CCHA.

The Beavers played 36:06 with the two-goal lead but with 6:14 to play in the game, Husky Tyrone Bronte pulled Michigan Tech within one. Michigan Tech used that momentum and with just 4.9 seconds remaining, Matthew Campbell scored the game-tying goal to send the game into overtime.

After a scoreless three-on-three extra period, the two teams would head to the shootout where Eric Martin and Roed converted on each of their attempts while Sholl stopped two of the Huskies three attempts to earn the extra point in the standings.

Bemidji State sold out defensively to stop the never ending Husky attack blocking the second most shots on the season with 24 including nine from junior Tony Follmer.

The Beavers will now rest up for its final bye week of the season and return to play Feb. 2-3 with a home series at Sanford Center against new CCHA member Augustana University.
