Colonials deny Beavers of comeback and earn series sweep Saturday in overtime

BSU Women’s Hockey rallies from down three but Colonials strike in overtime

MOON TOWNSHIP, Pa. – The Bemidji State University Women's Hockey team rallied back from a three-goal deficit and forced overtime against Robert Morris University Saturday night but the Colonials struck 2:32 into the extra frame to claim victory and earn the series sweep.

Sophomore Riley Reeves and freshman Isa Goettl scored in the second period to pull the Beavers within one before the second intermission while senior captain Alyssa Watkins deflected home a power-play goal halfway through the third period to tie the game.

However, Robert Morris' Thalia D'Elia scored 2:32 into the overtime period to capture victory for the Colonials.

Robert Morris opened the game with a short-handed goal from Calli Arnold 7:16 after the opening face-off. Shayne Desjardins followed by scoring with just 21 seconds left in the period to put the colonials up by two.

1:35 into the second period Morgan Giannone made it 3-0 for the Colonials and they maintained that lead for the next two minutes until Reeves fired the puck through traffic to score her first goal of the season 4:04 into the second period.

The score remained 3-1 in favor of RMU until Isa Goettl drove the net with 18 seconds left in the frame and redirected the puck top shelf and over the glove of the Colonials goaltender to score her second of the season.

The Beavers would head into the second intermission trailing by just one but 11:56 into the third, the Beavers gained a key power play and Watkins delivered after she redirected a Makenna Deering shot from the point to score her first of the season.

The teams would need the extra period to determine the winner and D'Elia delivered for the Colonials scoring 2:32 into the frame and clinching the series sweep.

The Beavers special teams excelled in the game going 1-for-4 on the power play and 3-for-3 on the penalty kill.

Graduate goaltender Josie Bothun stopped 26-of-30 shots including 16 in the third period but falls to 0-2-0 on the season with the loss.

The Beavers return home and resume Western Collegiate Hockey Association play by hosting St. Cloud State University Oct. 11-12 at Sanford Center.
