BEMIDJI, Minn. – The Bemidji State University Women's Hockey team earned their first win in Western Collegiate Hockey Association Friday night after defeating University of St. Thomas 4-1 at Sanford Center. The Beavers' third line of
Talya Hendrickson,
Raeley Carney and
Kate Johnson fueled the Beavers' victory scoring nine points in the game and factoring in on three of the Beavers' four goals.
Â
The Beavers earned their first three league points of the season and improve to 2-10-1 (1-8-0 WCHA). The conference victory is also the first WCHA win for first-year head coach
Amber Fryklund.
Â
Carney, T. Hendrickson and Johnson each recorded a career-high three points in the game with Carney scoring two goals and adding assist, T. Hendrickson scoring a goal and two assists and Johnson earning three assists. Sophomore
Hailey Armstrong scored her team-leading fifth goal of the season for the Beavers' fourth goal of the night.
Â
The Beavers got the start they wanted scoring first within the first three minutes of the game when T. Hendrickson scored her first of the season after hammering home a drop pass from Johnson 2:24 into the game.
Â
Â
The Beavers carried the one-goal lead throughout the first period and into the first intermission but the Tommies (5-7-1, 2-6-1 WCHA) struck just 29 seconds into the second period with a goal from Chloe Boreen, her fourth of the season.
Â
However, the Beavers dominated play in the period out-shooting the Tommies 13-6 and their attack finally broke through at 8:48 of the frame when Carney scored her first of the night after a hard-working centering pass from Johnson left her alone in front of the net.
Â
Â
The Beavers once again carried a one-goal lead into the intermission but this time they were first to score in the next frame when Armstrong took the puck all herself from the defensive zone and scored her team-leading fifth goal of the season.
Â
Â
Just 4:20 later, Carney put the Beavers up three with her second career two-goal night.
Â
Â
The Beavers four goals were the second-most scored this season. Bemidji State finished the game out-shooting the Tommies 24-18.
Â
All four goals were even-strength goals for the Beavers as they went 0-for-2 on the power play. Their penalty kill successfully killed-off all four Tommie power-plays.
Â
Freshman
Kaitlin Groess stopped 17-of-18 shots she faced to earn her second win of the season and improve to 2-8-0.
Â
The Beavers will attempt at their first WCHA series sweep since 2022 tomorrow afternoon when the two teams meet again for game two at 2:02 p.m.
