St. Cloud, Minn. – The Bemidji State University Track and Field team began its season with the Battle for the Paddle at St. Cloud State University Saturday. BSU earned the win, and the paddle, with 61 points against SCSU's 42.
On the track,
Ava Werner finished third in the mile race with a finish of 5:58.60. On the 400-meter race,
Josie Aitken took second with a time of 1:03.93 and
Makenna Frazier rounded out the top three with a time of 1:06.78. Three Beavers ended in the top five for the 60-meter hurdles with
Karina Olson taking it all at 8.95 seconds. Mille Rosaeg followed her with 9.30 seconds and
Reese Turner rounded out the top five with 10.39.
In the 60-meter dash finals, Rosaeg took second with a final time of 7.88 seconds, just 0.1 seconds behind the top finisher, SCSU's Katie Lavato.
Olivia Olson took fourth in the 60-meter finals at 8.13 seconds. In the 200-meter dash, the Beavers weren't able to grab as many high finishes as other races, marking just one in the top five.
Kylee Morton finished in 28.33 seconds, just under two seconds behind the top finisher. BSU ran without competition in the 4x1600-meter race and the team of
Maggie McCarthy,
Carol Miller,
Sophie Rylance and
Nadia Vaughn grabbed the Beavers five points with a time of 22:19.96. The Beavers' 4x400-meter race team finished with three points in second place, marking a 4:25.29 time to close out the track portion of the day.
The Beavers dominated the weight throw with
Mikenna Pattrin taking first at 16.17 meters,
Cassidy Schmidt in second with 12.92 meters,
Trista Bilden in fourth at 11.83 and
Emma Green in fifth with 11.79. Pattrin, Bilden and Schmidt took the top three places in the shotput throw as well, with distances of 12.61 meters, 11.69 meters and 10.57 meters, respectively. On the jumping side of the field events, Mille Rosaeg grabbed a 1.48-meter height in high jump for seconds place with
Natalee Hoffner behind her at 1.43 meters. BSU pole vaulters
Olivia Olson and
Chloe Knott took first and second with heights of 3.05 meters and 2.50, respectively. Finally, in long jump
Karina Olson finished first at 5.35 meters and Rosaeg grabbed 5.28 meters to take second.
The Beavers now prepare to head to Fargo, N.D. to take part in the Dakota Alumni Classic hosted by North Dakota State University next Saturday. More information on the meet will be released in the coming week.
