BEMIDJI, Minn. -- The Bemidji State University Women's Basketball team made a solid push in the third quarter, but a big first half by the Northern State Wolves was enough to send them to the 64-50 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference victory Tuesday night inside the BSU Gym.
Northern State (16-7, 12-5 NSIC) built a big lead following a 19-12 first quarter and 20-7 second quarter for the 39-19 halftime advantage. Backed by a 16-10 third quarter and early start in the fourth quarter, Bemidji State (5-16, 2-15 NSIC) got back to within 10 before the Wolves claimed the win.
It was another strong start for the Beavers scoring the first four points on a jumper by Amme Sheforgen and layup by Alyssa Hill. Bemidji State kept the lead at 10-8 on a layup by Sam Pogatchnik before Northern State closed the first quarter on an 11-2 run to open the 19-12 lead.
The run stretched into the second quarter as the Wolves scored the first 11 points of the second for the 30-12 advantage. Hill tallied five points in the quarter, along with a jumper by Ashlynne Guenther as the Wolves posted a 20-7 edge in the second to hold the 39-19 halftime lead.
Midway through the third quarter, the Beavers began to make a push. Rachel Koenig hit a jumper to help the Beavers close the third on a 12-2 run. Sheforgen hit a three-pointer and after a free throw by Hill, Tieryn Plasch took over hitting back-to-back three-pointers to cap the quarter and leave NSU with the 49-25 lead.
Near the midway point of the fourth quarter Sheforgen and Hill hit layups to cut the deficit to 10. That would be as close as the Beavers would get the rest of the way with Northern State coming away with the 14-point win.
Sheforgen and Hill tallied 13 points apiece to lead Bemidji State. Sheforgen added five rebounds and Hill with four. Plasch tallied nine points on a trio of three-pointers.
Bemidji State went 18-47 (38.3) from the field, 5-18 (27.8) from three and 9-13 (69.2) at the foul line. Northern State went 23-61 (37.7) from the field, 4-17 (23.5) from three and 14-18 (77.8) at the foul line. BSU held the 14-4 edge in bench points.
BSU will close the week playing at Minnesota Crookston this Thursday at 5:30 p.m.
