LIBERTY, Mo. – The Bemidji State University Baseball team rallied on day two of its series at William Jewell College in Liberty, Mo., Saturday afternoon and split its doubleheader with the Cardinals after falling 7-2 in game one but won 8-7 in game two.
The Beavers (1-10) earned their first win of the season after they overcame a four-run deficit after the second inning.
Sophomore
Jackson Schaffer led game two with his first home run of the season for the early 1-0 lead but William Jewell took the lead in the bottom of the inning with two runs. The Cardinals then took a 5-1 in the second with four runs.
The Beavers responded in the third when
Carter McLaughlin hit a two-RBI double followed by a three-run home run by junior
Hunter Daymond to put the Beavers back on top at 6-5. William Jewell responded a gain with a two-run home run to retake the lead in the fourth and the teams went scoreless until the seventh inning when senior
Ty Karger doubled down the left field line that scored two to put the Beavers on top, 8-7.
Junior
Brandon Lind continued to mow-down batters and sent down the Cardinals in order in the bottom of the seventh to pick up his first win of the season and as a Beaver. He pitched the final 3.2 innings and allowed just one hit and no runs while collecting three strikeouts to earn the win (1-0).
Schaffer led the Beavers at the plate going 3-for-4 with a home run, RBI and two base hits while McLaughlin went 2-for-4 with a double, two RBI and two runs scored. Karger also collected two hits going 2-for-3 with a double, walk and two RBI.
Sophomore
Christian Lindow started the game going 3.1 innings allowing seven runs, five earned, off seven hits and struck out two to get the no decision.
In the first game of the day the Beavers, were limited to two runs off seven hits with freshman
Zach Evenson and senior
Jack Munson leading the team with two hits each. Evenson brought in one of the Beavers' runs with an RBI single while McLaughlin brought in the other with an RBI single as well.
Freshman
Jacob Smith made his third start of the season going five innings and allowed five runs off eight hits and struck out five.
The Beavers shoot for their first series split of the season with game four tomorrow afternoon at 1:00 p.m.
