BEMIDJI, Minn. – The Bemidji State University Men's Hockey team advanced to the next round of the Central Collegiate Hockey Association Mason Cup Playoffs after completing the sweep over Ferris State University in the Quarterfinals Saturday night at Sanford Center.
Â
Junior goaltender
Mattias Sholl stopped all 25 shots he faced to help the Beavers (19-15-2) shutout the Bulldogs (10-24-2) and advance to the semifinal round next Saturday, also at Sanford Center. Freshman
Eric Pohlkamp scored two power-play goals to seal the victory while fifth-year senior
Carter Jones scored the game-winning goal and freshman
Jake McLean scored the fourth goal for BSU.
Â
Pohlkamp scored his ninth and 10
th goals of the season to become the first Bemidji State defenseman to reach double-digits in goals in its Division I era since John Haider scored 11 goals in 2003-04. He is tied for third for most goals by a BSU defenseman in a single season trailing leader Stefan Bjork's 15 in 1999-00.
Â
After a scoreless first period, Jones started the scoring for the Beavers 3:50 into the second frame with a snipe off the rush scoring his sixth of the season after sophomore
Adam Flammang made a nice play to send the puck over to Jones on the right wing.
Â
Â
Just before the period ended at the 15:24 mark, Pohlkamp scored his first of the game with a wrist shot from the right circle while on a Beaver power play.
Â
Â
He wasn't finished and with 51 seconds to play in the second, he scored a similar goal while on another Beaver power play to put the Beavers up by three heading into the final period.
Â
Â
The two power-play goals were the first time since Dec. 15 that Bemidji State scored twice with the man advantage.
Â
The third period was all BSU out-shooting the Bulldogs 19-3 in the period and McLean put the game out of reach 3:35 into the frame after scoring his fifth goal of the season at the top of the goal crease.
Â
Â
The Beavers finished with 39 shots to out-shoot Ferris State 39-25 while Sholl was the difference collecting his fourth shutout of his career and third of the season. He improved to 13-7-2 and ties a career-high of 13 wins.
Â
The Beavers now await their opponent for next Saturday's semifinal matchup at Sanford Center. Bemidji State will face either Minnesota State University, Mankato or Lake Superior State University depending on tomorrow's result in Mendota Heights, Minn., of the Lakers and University of St. Thomas.
Â
BSU hosts a win or go home matchup Saturday, March 16 against the Mavericks or Lakers that is slated for a 7:07 p.m., puck drop at Sanford Center.
