BEMIDJI, Minn. – The Bemidji State University softball team nearly overcame an 11-run deficit in game one of its Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference doubleheader with Minnesota State University, Moorhead Friday afternoon at the BSU Softball Field.
The Beavers (13-35, 7-18 NSIC) scored nine runs through the final three innings to bring their deficit to three but the Dragons (31-18, 18-9 NSIC) closed out the game earning a 13-10 victory in seven innings. MSUM then clinched the sweep with an 8-0, five-inning victory in game two.
With the pair of losses the Beavers have officially been eliminated from NSIC Softball Tournament contention and will end their 2024 season tomorrow afternoon against Northern State University.
The Beavers recorded a season-high 15 hits in the first action of the day. Six of those hits were doubles, also a season best, with
Alexa Christenson and
Molly Houts each collecting two.
Alexa Christenson led the team going 3-for-4 at the plate with two doubles, a walk, RBI and two runs scored. Houts,
Aubrey Aukerman,
Stephanie Ferguson and
Grace Gumiela each recorded two hits.
Houts added a walk earning her 22
nd of the season to set a new single season record at BSU.
Elle Hastings pitched 5.1 innings in relief of
Stella Dolan and allowed six runs off 11 hits in a no decision effort. Dolan was credited with the loss after allowing seven runs (five earned) off seven hits and struck out four.
The Beavers' bats struggled in game two and were held to just one hit by MSU-Moorhead pitcher Azalya Lopez. Gumiela doubled in the second inning for the Beavers' lone hit.
Freshman
Danica Sarff earned the loss in game two pitch 1.1 innings and allowed seven runs off five hits, walked three and struck out one. Dolan pitched the remaining 3.2 innings in relief and allowed just two base runners off a pair of hits and struck out two.
Bemidji State honors its two seniors, Dolan and Ferguson, tomorrow afternoon in between games against the Wolves. First pitch for game one is scheduled for 1 p.m.
