Volleyball returns to road for tournament in Michigan

BSU Volleyball travels to Grand Rapids and Allendale, Mich., to compete in Downtown Classic

BEMIDJI, Minn. – Following a short return to Bemidji, the Bemidji State University volleyball team returns to the road and travels to Michigan to continue its non-conference schedule this weekend. The Beavers travel to Grand Rapids and Allendale, Mich., to compete in the 2024 Hampton Inn and Suites Grand Rapids Downtown Classic co-hosted by Davenport University and Grand Valley State University.
 
The Beavers will play four matches from Friday, Sept. 13 to Saturday beginning with two matches Friday against Glenville State University and Davenport in Grand Rapids. The Beavers then travel just 28 miles to Allendale and the campus of Grand Valley State the following day where they will face Saginaw Valley State University and No. 19 Grand Valley State.

Bemidji State is returning from a successful trip to Hawai'i where the Beavers competed in the De Luz Chevrolet Hawai'i Fall Volleyball Challenge going 2-2 in the tournament. After falling 2-3 in a tightly contested first match against hosts Hawai'i at Hilo, the Beavers responded with a 3-1 victory over Saint Martin's University. University of Western Oregon then earned a 1-3 victory to kick-off the second day but the Beavers responded again with a 3-1 victory over Hawai'i Pacific.
 
Senior Ashley Crowl led the Beavers scoring 75 points and averaged 3.71 kills per set during the tournament. She totaled 63 kills in 167 attacks while hitting at a .180 clip to lead the team in attacks. She also paced the team with eight service aces and added eight blocks at the net.
 
She was followed by fifth-year senior Rylie Bjerklie who totaled 45 kills averaging 2.65 kills per set and hit a team-high .271 on 107 attacks. She also added 11 blocks for second on the team behind junior Zayda Priebe who compiled 15 blocks.
 
Senior Emily Wade drove the Beavers' attack raking up 140 assists to average 8.24 assists per set. She also fooled opposing defenses earning 12 kills.
 
Defensively, junior Jada Wlodarczyk paced the team with 50 digs (2.94/s) while junior Kylie Struble and Crowl each followed with 39.
 
Glenville State enters the weekend's action 1-4 and Davenport is 1-3. Saginaw Valley State is 2-1 while the Beavers' final opponent GVSU is 4-0 and ranked No. 19 in the latest American Volleyball Coaches' Association poll.
