ST. CLOUD, Minn. – The Bemidji State University Women's Hockey team fell in heartbreak fashion Saturday afternoon against No. 11 St. Cloud State University at Herb Brooks National Hockey Center in St. Cloud, Minn. After the Beavers took an early 2-0 lead, the Huskies stormed back to score three-unanswered goals including the game-winning goal with 1:09 to play to shock the Beavers and win 3-2.
Â
The Huskies completed their Western Collegiate Hockey Association series sweep over BSU with the victory.
Â
The Beavers started the way they wanted after freshman
Izy Fairchild scored first 8:09 into the first period with a beautiful shot that beat Huskie goaltender Sanni Ahola over the glove for her third goal of the season.
Â
Â
The Beavers took the lead into the first intermission and later extended their lead to two when redshirt freshman
Isa Goettl scored her sixth of the season 2:45 into the second period.
Â
Â
It looked as if BSU would take the two-goal lead into the second intermission but with 5:32, Siiri Yrjola scored a power-play goal to pull the Huskies within one and just four minutes later, Laura Zimmermann tied the game with a power-play goal of her own.
Â
The teams traded chances throughout the third period and again, seemed as if the teams would head into the intermission with the score locked at two but with just 1:09 remaining on the clock, St. Cloud State's Sofianna Sundelin put the Huskies on top to stun the Beavers.
Â
The Beavers were unwillingly handed their fourth-straight loss and drop to 4-20-1 (2-16-0 WCHA) on the season.
Â
Sophomore
Eva Filippova made 18 saves for the Beavers in between the pipes but falls to 0-6-0 this season.
Â
Bemidji State ends its 13-game road trip next weekend and travels to Minneapolis, Minn., for a WCHA series against University of Minnesota. The Beavers and Gophers go head-to-head in game two of the series on the campus of Valleyfair in Shakopee, Minn., as they participate in Hockey Day in Minnesota festivities.
