BEMIDJI, Minn. – Bemidji State University Men's Basketball defeated the University of Sioux Falls 76-68 on Saturday in Bemidji. Double doubles from
John Pecarich and
Tate Olson, plus a season-high game from
John Sutherland, gave the Beavers an edge to get back into the win column.
In the first half, Bemidji State and Sioux Falls exchanged leads eight times and were tied five times, with USF narrowly leading 34-31 at the end.
Tate Olson contributed significantly for Bemidji State, scoring two 3-pointers and adding a layup, while also making a defensive rebound and a steal. Olson's performance marked his seventh double-double of the season and the tenth of his career.
Malang Athian added a 3-pointer and two free throws to keep the score close. Despite Bemidji State's efforts, Sioux Falls capitalized on turnovers, maintaining a three-point edge going into the next half.
In the second half, Bemidji State took control of the game with key contributions from
John Sutherland and
Tate Olson. Sutherland scored multiple layups, including one at 15:00, and his consistent presence in the paint helped Bemidji State maintain a scoring edge. Sutherland's efforts led him to achieve a season high in points with 24. Olson added to the lead with a defensive rebound and a successful 3-pointer at 5:00, helping Bemidji State finish the half strong with a 45-34 advantage over Sioux Falls.
John Sutherland led the team with 24 points, connecting on 9 of 17 baskets and hitting 6 of 9 free throws.
Tate Olson contributed 15 points, making 6 of 12 shots, including three 3-pointers, and secured 10 rebounds.
Malang Athian also added 15 points, with an efficient 4 of 8 shooting and a perfect 4 for 4 from the free-throw line, while recording three assists and seven rebounds.
John Pecarich was another standout, scoring 20 points with 6 of 15 shooting and four 3-pointers, and matched Olson with 10 rebounds.
Bemidji State holds an overall record of seven wins and 13 losses, with a conference record of four wins and 10 losses in the NSIC. Sioux Falls has an overall record of 11 wins and nine losses, and a balanced conference record of seven wins and seven losses in the NSIC.
This victory broke a six-game losing streak for the Beavers. Up next, they will face St. Cloud State University on January 28, 2025, at 5:30 p.m. in St. Cloud. The game is available on the Beaver Radio Network and NSIC Network.
