Beavers beach Marauders ship with 88-76 win on Beach Night

BSU defeated UMary 88-76 at home Thursday night

BEMIDJI, Minn. – Bemidji State University Men's Basketball defeated the University of Mary, 88-76, on Thursday in Bemidji. Tate Olson recorded his eighth double double of the season while John Sutherland marked a team and personal season high in scoring. 
 
In the first half, Bemidji State took an early lead with Tate Olson scoring the first basket with a layup at 19:00. Olson continued to be an offensive force, contributing another layup at 16:12, and later adding a crucial 3-pointer at 5:30. John Sutherland made significant contributions with two layups and an assist, while Jalen Patterson also made a notable impact with a 3-pointer at 1:56 and assisting Sutherland's dunk at 1:18. BSU ended the half leading 39-32, demonstrating strong offensive plays and capitalizing on turnovers by UMary.
 
The second half saw Bemidji State increase its lead, with John Pecarich opening the scoring with a 3-pointer at 18:45. Tate Olson played a significant role, contributing defensively and offensively with multiple assists and rebounds, achieving his eighth double double of the season. John Sutherland was pivotal, scoring consistently throughout the half, including a layup at 2:15, helping Bemidji State maintain control. Despite several turnovers, Bemidji State's offensive efforts were efficient, as evidenced by their 18 baskets from 23 attempts, ultimately outscoring the Marauders 49-44 in the half.
 
John Sutherland led the team with a personal and team season-high of 26 points and demonstrated strong playmaking abilities with eight assists. His efficient shooting, making 13 of 16 shots, highlighted his offensive prowess. John Pecarich contributed significantly with 24 points, excelling from beyond the arc by hitting six of nine 3-point attempts, and added two steals. Tate Olson was effective in his role, scoring 17 points and leading the team with 12 rebounds, showcasing his capability in both scoring and rebounding. Jalen Patterson also made an impact with five assists and two steals, providing crucial support on both ends of the court.
 
Bemidji State held an overall record of eight wins and 14 losses, with a conference record of five wins and 11 losses in the NSIC. The Marauders had an overall record of four wins and 20 losses, with a conference record of two wins and 13 losses in the NSIC.
 
The Beavers now look to host University of Minnesota Crookston Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. The Beavers will celebrate a local Special Olympics Athlete of the Week and Mental Health Awareness Night. They'll then head to Aberdeen, S.D. Saturday to take on the Northern State Wolves at 3:30 p.m.
