ST. CLOUD, Minn. — Bemidji State University Soccer defeated St. Cloud State University 2-1 on Saturday at Husky Stadium. Bemidji State opened the scoring in the first half and secured the win with a second-half goal. St. Cloud St. managed to equalize briefly in the first half, but the visitors' defense held firm, with the goalkeeper recording four saves, including three critical stops in the second half.
The match between Bemidji State and St. Cloud State began with both teams deploying their goalkeepers, Jaylee Strickland and
Sonia Alfieri, respectively. Bemidji State's
Ella Wade scored a penalty kick goal in the 15th minute, giving the visiting team an early lead. St. Cloud State responded with Brooke Quam's equalizer in the 35th minute, assisted by Jordan Kardelis. Both teams had multiple opportunities, with Bemidji's
Katrina Barthelt taking three shots, two of which were saved by Strickland, while Alfieri saved a crucial shot from SCSU's Ellie Primerano. The first half ended with the score tied at 1-1.
Bemidji State secured a decisive edge over St. Cloud State in the second half with a key goal. The scoring action came in the 73rd minute when
Maggie Kramer netted a goal, assisted by Wade, bringing the visitors ahead 2-1. Prior to the goal, Alfieri made crucial saves at the 59th and 67th minutes from attempts by Primerano and Cady Compton, respectively. St. Cloud State pressed forward with numerous shots and corner kicks but was unable to convert their opportunities, concluding the half with Bemidji State maintaining their lead.
Alfieri recorded four saves in her complete game performance, allowing just one goal. Wade contributed significantly with a goal and an assist, tallying three points in the match. Kramer scored the game-winning goal, finishing with two shots on target. Barthelt added pressure with three shots, two of which were on goal.
Bemidji St. improved to 6-2-2 overall and 4-1-2 in conference play with the victory. St. Cloud St. fell to 6-1-3 overall and 4-1-2 in conference play following the defeat. The Beavers now travel to No. 2 Minnesota State University Mankato Sunday at 1 p.m. Live stream is available on the NSIC Network. The team returns home Oct. 17 to host University of Minnesota Crookston at 6 p.m.
