Beavers take down Golden Eagles, 3-1

Block Out Cancer Match concludes with 3-1 win over Minnesota Crookston

BEMIDJI, Minn. — Bemidji State University Volleyball (6-13, 3-8 NSIC) secured a 3-1 victory over University of Minnesota Crookston (6-13, 0-11 NSIC) on Saturday afternoon at BSU Gymnasium. Bemidji State clinched the match with a .333 hitting percentage in the decisive fourth set.
 
Bemidji State started the opening set with a strong offensive presence, as Lily Riese delivered the first kill for an early lead. Madison Tripp and Karley Dunham contributed defensively with a block, helping the Beavers maintain an edge. Despite a few service errors, the home team kept the score close, with notable kills from Grace Hoffard and Ava Athman. As the set progressed, Bemidji State faced pressure from Minnesota Crookston's offense, particularly from Carizma Muth. Substitutions by the Beavers, including Anna Paquette and Ella Kratochvil, helped close the gap with a service ace and timely kills. However, Minnesota Crookston capitalized on a late surge, with key points from Madison Carsten and Lexi Scharold, ultimately taking the first set 25-22.
 
Bemidji St. began the second set by establishing an early 3-0 lead, with kills from Riese and Dunham, both set up by Tripp. Although the Golden Eagles briefly closed the gap to 8-8, the Beavers regained momentum with a series of effective plays, including a crucial block by Hoffard and Riese that reclaimed the lead. The score remained tight, with both teams exchanging points until Bemidji St. made a decisive push. A service ace by Paquette, followed by another kill from Athman, propelled the team forward. The Beavers capitalized on their opponent's errors, extending their lead late in the set. Bemidji St. closed the set strong, with Kylie Gustafson securing the final point through a kill, assisted by Katie Brandl. The set concluded with Bemidji St. holding a 25-21 advantage, maintaining their lead in the match.
 
Bemidji State opened the third set with a strong offensive presence, quickly establishing a lead. Hoffard and Riese contributed with early kills, while a series of blocks by Hoffard and Tripp extended the advantage to 4-0. Despite a brief rally from Minn.-Crookston, the Beavers maintained control, with Riese and Dunham adding critical points. The Golden Eagles managed to close the gap, tying the score at 7-7, but Bemidji State responded effectively. Kratochvil and Gustafson executed timely kills, helping the Beavers regain momentum. Defensive efforts by Athman and Dunham were pivotal in maintaining the lead. As the set neared its conclusion, Bemidji State capitalized on Minn.-Crookston errors and continued their offensive push. With Riese sealing a late kill and additional points coming from unforced errors by Minn.-Crookston, Bemidji State secured a 25-19 win in the set.
 
Bemidji State began the fourth set with a narrow deficit but quickly found momentum through the offensive contributions of Riese, who delivered multiple kills to keep the team competitive. After trailing early, the Beavers capitalized on several attack errors by Minn.-Crookston, drawing level at various points in the set. Bemidji State then surged ahead, with Hoffard and Dunham contributing key kills. The team continued to apply pressure, with Riese again instrumental in extending the home team's lead. A series of errors by the visiting team helped Bemidji State maintain their advantage. In the closing moments, the Beavers solidified their position with effective blocking and consistent play by their front line, culminating in Riese securing the final point. The set concluded with Bemidji State securing a 25-20 victory, closing the match confidently.
 
Lily Riese led Bemidji St. with 21 kills and totaled 21.5 points across four sets. Madison Tripp was pivotal in setting up the offense, recording 32 assists. Grace Hoffard contributed 12 kills and four total blocks, accumulating 15 points overall. Karley Dunham added six kills without an error and registered five total blocks.
 
Bemidji St. holds an overall record of 6-13 and a conference record of 3-8 in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference. Minn.-Crookston has an overall record of 6-13 and is 0-11 in NSIC play. Their next game will take place at the BSU Gymnasium against Minnesota Duluth on Tuesday, Oct. 21, at 6 p.m. Tickets are available via Hometown Ticketing and in person at the door.
