Beavers continue homestand and welcome Colonials to town

BSU Women’s Hockey hosts Robert Morris for nonconference series

BEMIDJI, Minn. – The Bemidji State Women's Hockey team continues its homestand to start the 2025-26 season this weekend by hosting Robert Morris University for a pair of non-conference games at Sanford Center.

The Beavers (0-2-0, 0-2-0 WCHA) host the Colonials (2-0-0, 2-0-0 AHA) for the first time since 2015. Game one between the teams is slated for Friday, Oct. 3 with puck drop at 6:02 p.m., followed by game two Saturday at 3:02 p.m.

Each game of the series can be streamed online at Big Ten Plus with Rob Aitken of the Beaver Radio Network providing play-by-play. The Beaver Radio Network broadcast can also be tuned in on the radio at FM 94.3 or 1300 AM.

Bemidji State Notes
  • Bemidji State continues a four-game homestand this weekend after hosting No. 1 University of Wisconsin last weekend to open the 2025-26 season.
  • The Beavers were swept by the top-ranked Badgers falling 9-2 and 5-0 in their Western Collegiate Hockey Association series.
  • Junior Kate Johnson and freshman Maddie Kaiser scored goals for the Beavers in Friday's slate with Kaiser netting her first collegiate goal and the first of the season for BSU midway through the second period.
  • Junior Carmen Bray and freshman Kasey Senden each earned assists on Kaiser's goal, both of their first points in a green and white sweater.
  • Sophomore Kaitlin Groess started each game in the crease for the Beavers and made 61 saves.
  • Freshman Ashlyn Hazlett made her first appearance in net coming in relief during the third period of game one and made five saves.
  • The Beavers commit themselves to selling out in the defensive zone and blocked 33 shots, most in the WCHA.
  • Freshman Katy Comstock showed zero hesitation to help her goaltender blocking eight shots over the weekend.
  • Despite her 5-foot-0 inch stature, Comstock leads the WCHA in blocked shots.
  • Bemidji State is 9-5-1 all-time against the Colonials and last made a road trip to Moontownship, Pa., for its last meeting during the 2024-25 season.
  • The Colonials earned a pair of victories over the Beavers falling 2-0 in game one and then 4-3 in overtime for game two.
  • The series is tied 2-2-1 when played at Sanford Center.
  • Head coach Amber Fryklund is 0-2-0 when facing the Colonials.
  • The Beavers begin year two under the leadership of head coach Amber Fryklund after going 6-30-1 during her first season as head coach in 2024-25.
  • Fryklund returns 16 skaters from last season including all four of her leading scorers.
  • She also returns 80-percent of goals scored last season (45-of-56) and her top six goal scorers.
  • However, she lost three of her top point-getters from the blueline from the 2024-25 season.
  • Fryklund returns both netminders in Kaitlin Groess and Eva Filippova who played serious minutes between the pipes.
  • She has brought in 11 newcomers to the green and white including transfers Carmen Bray (St. Cloud State) and Elly Klepinger (Minnesota).
  • Morgan Smith highlights the Beavers' returners after leading the team in points (20) and goals (11) during her freshman season.
  • Junior Hailey Armstrong will captain the Beavers during the 2025-26 season and will be assisted by Smith and senior Raeley Carney.
  • Armstrong leads all returners having scored 19 goals over her career and recording 28 points.
  • She is followed by Smith with 20 points and junior Kate Johnson with 17 (5g-12a).
  • Eight freshmen make their green and white debut this season in Senja Leeper (Minnetonka HS), Lola Macuiba (Shawnigan Lake School), Kasey Senden (Hill-Murray HS), Addie Morris (Benilde-St. Margaret's), Paige Smith (Edmonton Jr. Oilers), Maddie Kaiser (Balmoral Hall Prep), Katy Comstock (Warroad HS) and Ashlyn Hazlett (Minnetonka HS).
