Beavers outlast No. 10 Huskies in overtime thriller

BSU Women’s Hockey defeats No. 10 St. Cloud State behind Hailey Armstrong’s overtime game winner

BEMIDJI, Minn. – The Bemidji State University Women's Hockey team defeated No. 10 St. Cloud State University, 6-5, in a thrilling overtime finish at Sanford Center Saturday afternoon in their Western Collegiate Hockey Association series finale. Hailey Armstrong netted the game-winning goal 1:03 into the extra period to earn two league points for the Beavers.
 
Despite a chaotic third period where Bemidji State conceded four goals, the team showcased resilience, culminating in a decisive 6-on-5 goal and an overtime winner. "Super proud of our response today from our game from yesterday," Fryklund said. "Certainly not how we drew it up today. There's no one else you want with the puck on their stick when the game is on the line than Hailey Armstrong." Armstrong sealed the victory with a precise shot, highlighting her knack for delivering in high-pressure situations. The third line, featuring Raeley Carney, Talya Hendrickson, and Shelby Sandberg, contributed significantly, creating momentum that carried throughout the match. "They just worked. They went out there worked hard," Fryklund added. The game marked a growth moment for the program, with players on and off the ice bringing energy and focus.
 
The line of Carney, Hendrickson and Sandberg scored six of the Beavers' 18 points in the game. Carney scored two goals and won 11 faceoffs, contributing significantly to the team's offensive efforts. Isa Goettl tallied one goal and added two assists, finishing with a total of three points. Morgan Smith recorded a power-play goal and two assists while Hendrickson, Carmen Bray and Sandberg both had two assists. Senior netminder Ava Hills made 38 saves for the Beavers to earn her first victory.
 
The first period began with Raeley Carney winning the opening faceoff for Bemidji State. Bemidji State took the lead at 14:42 when Izy Fairchild scored, assisted by Olivia Dronen and Morgan Smith. Bemidji State extended their advantage to 2–0 at 16:05 through a goal by Raeley Carney, with Talya Hendrickson and Shelby Sandberg providing the assists. St. Cloud St. generated several shots but were denied by Ava Hills, who maintained a clean sheet through the first period.
 
Morgan Smith extended Bemidji State's lead to 3–0 early in the second period with a power-play goal at 17:20, assisted by Izy Fairchild and Isa Goettl. The Huskies responded at 12:57, as Alice Sauriol netted a goal with an assist from Laura Zimmermann, cutting the deficit to 3–1. Raeley Carney restored the three-goal advantage for Bemidji State at 5:13, scoring an even-strength goal with help from Talya Hendrickson and Shelby Sandberg. The period concluded with Bemidji State leading 4–1, despite the Huskies' attempts to capitalize on a late power play.
 
SCSU cut the deficit to one early in the third period when Sydney Lamb scored at 15:38 with assists from Alice Sauriol and Sofianna Sundelin. Payton Holloway then tied the game just over a minute later at 14:55, assisted by Grace Wolfe. SCSU continued their offensive surge, taking the lead at 4:29 with Laura Zimmermann's goal, assisted by Sauriol and Wolfe. With time winding down, Bemidji State pulled their goalie for an extra attacker, and Isa Goettl netted the equalizer with just 31 seconds remaining, assisted by Morgan Smith and Carmen Bray, to end the period tied 5–5.
 
In a tense overtime period, Bemidji State's Hailey Armstrong secured a sudden-death victory over SCSU with a goal at 3:57. The play developed from assists by Isa Goettl and Carmen Bray, ensuring Bemidji State's triumph. The Huskies' Avery Farrell had an early wide shot and Emilia Kyrkkö stopped a Bemidji attempt from Lola Macuiba, but Armstrong's finish ended the contest. The home team prevailed with a 6–5 win, marking Armstrong's seventh goal of the season.
 
The Beavers finish the series with two points against the 10th ranked Huskies and improve to 4-9-1 (2-9-1 WCHA) on the season while the Huskies fall to 5-10-1 (2-9-1 WCHA).
 
Bemidji State will spend Thanksgiving on the road and travels St. Charles, Mo., Nov. 28-29 for a non-conference series at Lindenwood University.
