Beavers down Lions in first game of Thanksgiving Classic

BSU defeated SLU by a score of 87-78 at the FSU Thanksgiving Classic Friday evening

LAKELAND, Fla. — Bemidji State University Men's Basketball (3-2, 0-1 NSIC) secured an 87-78 victory over Saint Leo University (2-3, 0-1 Sunshine State) at Jenkins Field House on Friday in Lakeland, Fla. Bemidji State capitalized with 42 points in the paint, while Saint Leo managed 23 points off second chances.
 
Bemidji State opened the first half with a strong performance, quickly leveling the score 2–2 with a layup from Henry Shannon III. As the half progressed, the Beavers found their rhythm and executed a series of successful plays, including a fast-break layup by Nathan Fenske to take the lead. The team's shooting was efficient, converting 19-of-32 field goals, which included five 3-pointers.
 
The Beavers capitalized on Saint Leo's turnovers, highlighted by John Pecarich's effective shooting, which contributed to the team's advantage. With strong defensive plays, including three blocks, they maintained control. Closing out the half, Bemidji State led 47–35, demonstrating a balanced offensive and defensive effort.
 
Bemidji State began the second half with a layup from Fenske, assisted by Austin Josephson, at 19:51. Shannon contributed significantly, scoring multiple field goals, including a layup at 18:07 that was assisted by Isaac Severts. Pecarich added to the team's advantage with a 3-pointer at 15:07.
 
Saint Leo responded with a series of successful shots, including a 3-pointer by Luther Smith at 15:58, but the Beavers maintained control. Severts and Dominic Fairbanks each hit 3-pointers, extending the lead. Despite Saint Leo's attempts to close the gap, including Donovan Hill's 3-pointer at 11:21, the Beavers' defense held firm.
 
In the closing minutes, Bemidji State solidified their position with free throws by Pecarich and Fairbanks, extending the lead to a final score of 87-78. The half ended with Bemidji State maintaining their lead despite Saint Leo's efforts to catch up.
 
Pecarich led the team with 35 points, converting 12 of 19 field goals and hitting five 3-pointers. Shannon contributed 20 points and added two steals before fouling out. Jobe Josephson posted 12 points, shooting 5 of 7 from the field, and recorded two blocks. Fenske collected three steals and added seven rebounds.
 
Bemidji St. holds a 3-2 overall record and is 0-1 in NSIC play. Saint Leo stands at 2-3 overall with a 0-1 mark in Sunshine State competition. The Beavers now look to take on the tournament's host, Florida Southern University, Saturday afternoon to close out the trip.
