BSU hosts Augsburg University 2 p.m. Saturday for second exhibition of the year

BEMIDJI, Minn. — Bemidji State University Women's Basketball is set to host Augsburg University at 2 p.m. Saturday for the team's second exhibition of the season. The Beavers dominated the North Central University Rams Tuesday night in Bemidji, winning the season-opening exhibition 93-67.

All 15 BSU student-athletes saw time against NCU Tuesday as the team works towards finding their identity for the upcoming season. Senior forward Kassandra Caron led the scoring with 13 points, scoring four inside the arc and adding five free throws. Caron tied with Tieryn Plasch and Aubrey Heyer with six rebounds each. Plasch earned 12 points in the exhibition while Heyer and Gabrielle Fineday each marked 11. Ashlynne Guenther dominated on defense, marking four defensive rebounds, two blocks and two steals. The Beaver bench had a strong showing, marking 44 points.

Saturday's matchup will be the first bit of competition for the Auggies this season. Last year, AU went 3-22 overall with a 1-17 record in the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. The Auggies marked wins over Bethany Lutheran College, Crown College and St. Olaf College. This season, the Auggies return their top scorer, senior forward Amira LaDuke who averaged 10.7 points per game last year and was the team's top rebounder with 5.6 per game. LaDuke also tied for the lead in blocks per game with 0.9 with sophomore guard Lani Fonoti. Junior guard Saylor Gallagher returns as the team's most prolific steals earner, averaging 1.2 last year.

The Beavers start the regular gameplay next weekend as they travel to Valley City State University for a non-conference matchup. They'll return for a home game against University of Minnesota Morris Tuesday Nov. 17 at 6 p.m. Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference play kicks off Dec. 25 as the Beavers travel to the University of Minnesota Duluth. They'll then head on a trip to Tampa, Fla. for the University of Tampa Thanksgiving Classic before getting into the full NSIC schedule in December.
