BEMIDJI, Minn. – The Bemidji State University Women's Hockey team came close to scoring the game-tying goal against Minnesota State University, Mankato but the Mavericks scored three unanswered goals late in the third period to earn a 5-1 victory over the Beavers in their Western Collegiate Hockey Association series finale Saturday afternoon at Sanford Center.

The Beavers thought to have scored the game-tying goal late in the second period but an early whistle negated a Beaver goal and the Mavericks took advantage scoring three times in the final 8:07.

Genevieve Hendrickson scored her second goal of the season for the Beavers' lone tally while freshman
Kaitlin Groess made 33 saves. The Beavers were stymied by Maverick goaltender Jessie McPherson who turned aside 34 of the Beavers 35 shots.

Bemidji State totaled 35 shots in the game, the third-most this season and most since Oct. 18.

Minnesota State opened the game with 1:36 left in the first period with a power-play goal from JuliAnna Gazdik but the Beavers weren't fazed and 29 seconds later, Hendrickson beat McPherson for her second goal of the season.

The score remained locked 1-1 for the next 5:51 of play and 4:44 into the second period, Kamryn Van Batavia put the Mavericks back on top with her third goal of the season. The Beavers battled back and while on power play late in the second, the Beavers' seemed to have tied the game with 3:08 left in the period but an early whistle by the referee deemed the play dead before the game-tying goal.

The Mavericks then went into the second intermission clinging to the one-goal lead but pulled away in the third with three unanswered goals late in the period.

The Beavers fall to 5-23-1 (3-19-0 WCHA) with the loss and look ahead to next weekend where they remain at home with a WCHA series against University of Minnesota Duluth.
