SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – The Bemidji State University Baseball team won their series opener against University of Sioux Falls as the Beavers went 1-3 in their four-game Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference series Saturday and Sunday at The Birdcage in Sioux Falls, S.D.
The Beavers scored the second most runs of the season in game one against the Cougars to win 11-4 Saturday afternoon. The Beavers also hit a season-high three home runs in the game from
Beau Thoma,
Zach Evenson and
Dylan Hedley.
The Cougars bounced back in game two of Saturday's doubleheader earning a 10-2 victory and then won by games Sunday by scores of 1-0 and 16-6.
Senior
Brandon Lind earned his second-straight victory and moved to 2-3 on the season after he pitched 5 2/3 innings allowing just three runs of eight hits and struck out six in game one.
The Beavers were close to earning the game three victory to start Sunday's doubleheader falling 1-0 in a pitcher's duel. Senior
Zach Evenson pitched five innings allowed just one run (unearned) off six hits while the Beavers' bats were held to just four hits by USF pitcher Jake Ammann who pitched the complete game shutout.
Sophomore
Matt Filippi led the Beavers at the plate in the series going 7-for-13 (.538) with one double, three RBI, two walks and stole five bases. He has collected a hit in five straight games while Evenson leads the team having reached base in 14 straight games.
The Beavers now make the trip home for a quick turnaround before heading to Duluth, Minn., for a mid-week NSIC doubleheader against University of Minnesota Duluth Tuesday.
