Buettner and Barthelt lead Beavers to season’s first victory at NWMSU

BSU Women’s Soccer rebounds with 1-0 win at Northwest Missouri State Sunday

MARYVILLE, Mo. – The Bemidji State University Women's Soccer team rebounded from a season-opening loss Friday evening with its first win of the season Sunday afternoon by defeating Northwest Missouri State University 1-0 in Maryville, Mo.

Senior Katrina Barthelt scored just 104 seconds into the match while sophomore Rozlyn Buettner made five saves to earn her first collegiate shutout. The Beavers moved to 1-1 (0-0 NSIC) and improved to 3-0-0 all-time against the Bearcats (1-1, 0-0 MIAA).

The reigning Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference scoring champion and Preseason Offensive Player of the Year, Katrina Barthelt, wasted little time in the match to score her first goal of the season when broke free down the left side, beat two Bearcat defenders and finished with the right foot to score just 1:44 into the match.

The Beavers outplayed the Bearcats in the first half out-shooting them 7-2 but NWMSU responded in the second half by controlling most of the play in their offensive third. The Bearcats produced four shots on goal during the half but Buettner was strong in between the posts denying all four shots. She finished the match with a career-high five saves, of which 80-percent were in the second half. She also earned her first career victory in just her second career start.

Barthelt and sophomore Dayna Stocke paced the Beavers with two shots on goal each while Breanna Weilert and Megan Ko each had one for a team total of six.

Emma Huelsnitz and Julia Freed each played all 90 minutes in the match while Madeline Davey followed with 77.

Bemidji State now returns to Minnesota and will next travel to Duluth for a non-conference battle with University of Minnesota Duluth Friday, Sept. 12.
