Beavers shutout by No. 7 Mavericks

BSU allows early second-half goal from MSU, unable to convert two shots on goal into points

BEMIDJI, Minn. — Bemidji State University Soccer lost to No. 7 Minnesota State University, Mankato 1-0 on Friday in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference play at Chet Anderson Stadium. Bemidji State held Minnesota State scoreless in the first half before the Mavericks scored once after halftime. 
 
After an early Minnesota State shot went left, Bemidji State created a chance at 8:50 when Madisen Fritel put an attempt to the bottom left that Lauren McAlpine saved. The Mavericks generated more pressure in the middle of the first half, with Payton Kropp saving Addie Dobratz's shot at 20:39 before later attempts from Reese Hilsenbeck and Amara Smith missed the frame. Kropp added saves on Ella Huettl at 31:08 and Ruthie Gyasi at 39:38 as MSU earned three corner kicks in the final 12 minutes, and the first half ended scoreless.
 
MSU moved in front early in the second half when Maddix Archer scored at 49:41 for a 1-0 lead, and BSU looked for a response with Dayna Stocke sending a shot wide right at 52:53. Kropp kept the margin at one with a save on Abby Hoiska's shot at 62:28, while the Mavericks had several attacks halted by offside calls before Archer put another attempt over the goal at 75:25. The Beavers created a late chance when Sydney Sutherland put a shot on frame at 88:13, but Lauren McAlpine made the save and Minnesota State closed out the second half for a 1-0 final.
 
Kropp played all 90 minutes in goal and finished with four saves while allowing one goal. Sutherland recorded one shot and put it on goal. Fritel finished with one shot on goal.
 
Bemidji St. is 4-3-3 overall and 3-2-2 in conference play. Minnesota St. is 9-0-1 overall and 6-0-1 in conference play. Up next, Bemidji State hosts St. Cloud State University on Sunday, Oct. 4, at 1 p.m. at Chet Anderson Stadium in Bemidji, Minn.
