Beavers swept by Huskies in home match

BSU held the edge at the net with five blocks, but fell in the attack game

BEMIDJI, Minn. — Bemidji State University Volleyball was swept by St. Cloud State University in a 3-0 match (21-25, 13-25, 19-25) on Friday. Bemidji State finished with 38 kills and a .289 hitting percentage, while St. Cloud State totaled 52 kills and hit .444.
 
BSU hit .289 with 38 kills, but SCSU produced 52 kills on a .444 hitting percentage and added a 43-31 edge in digs.The Beavers' strongest team contrast came at the net, where it recorded five total blocks to the Huskies' three, while SCSU also held a 7-2 advantage in service aces.
 
Bemidji State's biggest stretch came on Kayla Gallagher's serve, when it scored six straight points to turn a 9-4 deficit into a 10-9 lead behind blocks involving Grace Hoffard, Madison Tripp and Nevaeh Carlson and kills from Hoffard and Carlson. St. Cloud State moved back in front late, and Bemidji State stayed within 23-21 on kills by Carlson and Ella Kratochvil. St. Cloud State took the final two points to win the set 25-21.
 
BSU spent the second set playing out of an early 9-1 hole after SCSU took eight of the first nine points. Isabella Vander Velden supplied BSU's first point on a Tripp assist and later had back-to-back kills that moved the set to 17-9. SCSU closed with the final five points to take the set 25-13.
 
Bemidji State worked back from an 11-6 deficit to tie the third set at 17-17 on Ava Boelter's service ace, with kills from Carlson, Ava Athman, Kratochvil and Hoffard helping close the gap. St. Cloud State answered with the next six points to move ahead 23-17. Bemidji State got late kills from Vander Velden and Carlson, but St. Cloud State finished the set 25-19.
 
Kratochvil led the Beavers with 10 kills while hitting .391. Tripp recorded 34 assists, six digs and two block assists. Hoffard finished with seven kills on 12 attacks without an error, hitting .583, and added two block assists. Ava Boelter collected eight digs and served two aces.
 
Bemidji State is 13-5 overall and 5-5 in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference play. St. Cloud State is 13-5 overall and 7-3 in the conference. Up next, BSU hosts Minnesota State University, Mankato on Saturday, Oct. 10, at 11 a.m. at BSU Gymnasium in Bemidji.
