VIERA, Fla. — Bemidji State University Softball faced a challenging series at the Space Coast Complex, concluding the series with a record of 6-15 after four games, winning one.
In their opening match, Bemidji State (5-13) encountered Thomas More University (5-6), suffering a 4-1 defeat. The Saints took an early lead with two runs in the first inning, highlighted by a single from Haylee Palmer. The Beavers only managed to score in the sixth inning when
Alayna DeGraef crossed home plate due to a fielding error, but Thomas More responded with two more runs in the seventh to secure the win.
Brianna Ness pitched a complete game, allowing 6 hits and 2 earned runs.
Moving on to their second game, Bemidji State (5-14) faced Bentley University (2-8) and fell 9-3. Bentley dominated the second inning, scoring seven unearned runs, which proved insurmountable for the Beavers. Bemidji State attempted to rally, with
Avery Amidon crossing home and runs scored by
Jackie Larsen and
Brianna Ness in the fifth inning, but the game concluded without further scoring.
Keira Lucero and
Danica Sarff split pitching duties, with Sarff showing resilience in relief.
The Beavers then faced Goldey-Beacom College (2-7), notching a 9-5 victory. Bemidji State capitalized on four errors from their opponents, showcasing strong offensive performance with 13 hits.
Kassandra Balabon led with two hits and three runs, while
Jackie Larsen and
Alayna DeGraef contributed significantly to the scoring.
Danica Sarff started on the mound but was relieved by
Keira Lucero, who delivered an impressive scoreless performance in her 3 2/3 innings.
In their final match of the tournament, Bemidji State (6-15) faced D'Youville University (7-5) and narrowly lost 5-4. The Saints initially surged ahead, but Bemidji State rallied in the fifth inning, tying the game at 4-4 thanks to key hits and a sacrifice fly by
Lauren Beissel. However, D'Youville reclaimed the lead in the sixth inning, and the Beavers could not respond in the seventh.
Brianna Ness and
Sydney Klusman pitched effectively, allowing a combined 9 hits and 5 runs.
Next up for Bemidji State is a matchup against Malone University on Wednesday, March 11, at the USSSA Space Coast Complex in Viera, Florida. The first pitch is scheduled for 10 a.m. EST. The tournament concludes with the Beavers taking on No. 11 University of Indianapolis at 2:30 p.m. EST.
