Trip to Nebraska ends in shutout losses to Wayne State

Beavers drop two to WSC, 10-0 and 9-0, Saturday afternoon

WAYNE, Neb. — Bemidji State University Softball faced a challenging doubleheader against Wayne State College at the Pete Chapman Complex, suffering two losses with scores of 10-0 and 9-0. After these games, Bemidji State's record now stands at 6-21 overall and 0-4 in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference, while Wayne State improves to 23-5 with a 3-1 mark in the conference.
 
In the first game, Bemidji State (6-20, 0-3 NSIC) struggled offensively, managing just three hits against Wayne State (22-5, 2-1 NSIC), who capitalized with 12 hits including five doubles. Wayne State took an early lead in the first inning when Marth doubled to left center, later scoring on Scobee's double, making it 1-0. The Wildcats extended their lead in the second inning with Kincaid scoring on a groundout by Marth for a 2-0 advantage. 
 
The third inning was pivotal, as Wayne State exploded for five runs, highlighted by Borngrebe's double and a single from Rochholz. Klein's single and Marth's double brought in four more runs, pushing the score to 7-0. Coleman then launched a two-run homer in the fourth, increasing the lead to 9-0. In the fifth, Brustuen scored on a single by Fritz to finalize the score at 10-0. 
 
Tibby Hessian pitched 2/3 of an inning for Bemidji State, giving up two hits and one earned run. Sydney Klusman took over for two innings, allowing eight hits and six earned runs, while striking out one. Calleigh Richards was the standout for the Beavers, going 2-for-2 at the plate, with Morgan Benedict also contributing a hit.
 
In the second game, Bemidji State recorded seven hits but could not convert, leaving nine runners stranded. Wayne State took control in the second inning with a solo home run followed by a three-run shot, taking a commanding 5-0 lead. They extended their advantage to 6-0 in the fifth with a sacrifice fly and added three more runs in the seventh due to a fielder's choice and a wild pitch, sealing the game at 9-0.
 
Danica Sarff started on the mound for Bemidji State, allowing five earned runs on five hits in 1 2/3 innings. Keira Lucero pitched 4 1/3 innings in relief, allowing four runs on four hits, while Tibby Hessian closed the game with a scoreless inning. Defensively, Aubrey Aukerman made four assists and Jackie Larsen recorded six putouts. Offensively, Jillian Johnson shined with a 2-for-3 performance, while Calleigh Richards added a hit and a stolen base.
 
Looking ahead, Bemidji State will face Southwest Minnesota State University on Saturday, March 28, in Marshall, Minnesota, with the first pitch scheduled for 1 p.m.
