Hahni Johnson named Interim Head Volleyball Coach

Assistant coach elevated to lead Beaver Volleyball program entering 2026 season

BEMIDJI, Minn. — Bemidji State University Director of Athletics Britt Lauritsen has announced the appointment of Hahni Johnson as Interim Head Coach of the Beaver Volleyball program.

"Hahni is a natural successor as interim head coach of Bemidji State Volleyball," said Lauritsen. "Her familiarity with the program, her strong connections with our current team and recruits and her unwavering tenacity to learn, grow and lead will set her up for success. As a Beaver Volleyball family, we are excited to keep moving forward and continue raising the level of play at Bemidji State. We have an exciting, talented and hungry roster ready to show the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference what we can do. Coach Hahni is another example of the capable and dynamic energy we hope to continue fostering within Beaver Athletics."

Johnson enters her second season with the Beavers this fall after joining the program as an assistant coach in 2025. She assumes the interim head coaching role following the departure of Erika Bute

"I am eager for this opportunity to lead the Beavers and grateful to continue working with such a resilient and dedicated group of young women," said Johnson. "This program has a strong foundation, and I'm excited to build on the work that's already been done. Our student-athletes have embraced every challenge with determination, and I'm looking forward to helping them continue to grow on and off the court. I'm thankful to Britt and our administration for their confidence in me, and I can't wait to get back in the gym as we prepare to compete this season."

Johnson arrived at Bemidji State following a successful stint as a graduate assistant coach with the Colorado Mesa University beach volleyball program. While at CMU, she coordinated recruiting efforts, organized team travel logistics, assisted with student-athlete development and helped plan daily practices. In addition to her collegiate coaching experience, Johnson has coaching with Ohana Beach Volleyball in Grand Junction, Colo. and Pass to Play AK in Anchorage, AK.

Johnson enjoyed an accomplished playing career at CMU, where she earned a bachelor's degree in K-12 Physical Education and a master's degree in Sport Management. A two-time team captain, she received the program's Leadership Award, earned D2ADA Academic Achievement honors, was a three-time Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Honor Roll Student Athlete and became a two-time AVCA Beach Volleyball All-American in 2022 and 2024.

In high school, Johnson was also named a two-time Alaska Volleyball Gatorade Player of the Year in 2018 and 2019.
