Alex Gray

Alex Gray joins the Beaver Football coaching staff in 2019 as the outside linebackers coach. Gray comes to BSU after finishing his four-year playing career as a linebacker at University of South Dakota.

Gray, in his first season at BSU, led the outside linebackers in 2019 and was on staff for a team that went 8-3 in 2019. The Gang Green defense recorded 30 sacks, averaged 20.8 points per game, and boasted a 28.7 percent third down conversion rates, which ranks 13th best in the nation. The red zone defense for the Beavers ranks 4th best in the country with 60.7 percent. Linebacker Gabe Ames was named to the All-NSIC team and Yaquub Mohamed was named to the All-NSIC Second team.  

Gray played linebacker with the Coyotes and made 17 consecutive starts to finish his career. He led the USD defense in 2018 with 82 total tackles and recorded 184 in 33 games as an inside/outside linebacker. During the 2018 campaign, Gray was named Missouri Valley Football Conference Defense Player of the Week after recording seven tackles, two sacks, one fumble recovery, and one interception.

During the summer of 2018, Gray served as the USD program team camp counselor where he instructed linebackers on basic fundamentals and techniques, and aided coaches with drill demonstration and implementation. He also supervised meal nutrition and dormitory behavior of high school athletes.

Gray is from New Lenox, Ill., and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in business administration in December 2018 from USD.
