Mike Boschee

Mike Boschee enters his 14th season as head coach of the Bemidji State University men's basketball team in 2025-26. Boschee became the 16th head coach of the Beavers prior to starting the 2012-13 season.

The 2024-25 Beaver Men's Basketball went 10-19 overall and 7-15 in the NSIC, earning a spot in the NSIC tournament, taking on St. Cloud State. The Beavers fell to the Huskies, 68-60, in the first round at St. Cloud. Under Boschee's leadership, John Sutherland was named to the 2024-25 All-NSIC Second team after his senior season propelled him into the top spot in the BSU record book for rebounds (733), second in points (1650) and fifth in assists (290). Sutherland earned a total of five player of the week nods during his career, plus three all-academic team nods, two first team All-NSIC and one second team. In the 2023-24 season, he was named to the D2CCA All-Central Region Second Team.

The 2023-24 team went 13-16 overall and 9-13 in the conference, falling in the first round of the NSIC tournament at Sioux Falls. They entered the season ranking sixth in the NSIC's Preseason Coaches' Poll and finished ninth behind Sioux Falls and ahead of Wayne State, each with matching conference records. John Sutherland and Dalton Albrecht each earned conference player of the week nods during the 23-24 season. Albrecht earned a pair of player of the week nods along with the D2CIDA Men's Basketball Division II Player of the Week on February 13, 2024 after a pair of wins, including a career-high scoring game against Minnesota Crookston.  The pair also earned All-NSIC honors.

It was a season to remember for the Beavers during the 2022-23 campaign. Bemidji State jumped out to a 5-1 record and used a strong home record (12-3 inside the BSU Gym) to reach 20 wins in program history for just the third time. BSU collected 13 NSIC wins for the second time in Boschee's career at BSU and the 20th win of the season marked 250 in Boschee's coaching career combined at both BSU and Central (IA). As the conference tournament approached, Bemidji State defeated nationally-ranked MSU Moorhead and claimed a win over St. Cloud State to earn a home playoff game in the first round of the NSIC Tournament. The Beavers hosted Augustana and won the hard-fought 92-88 win to advance to the quarterfinals. That's where the 20th win of the season happened against Wayne State and in the process, BSU reached the semifinals for the first time since 2012-13. The magical run ended in the semifinals, but not before the Beavers took MSU Moorhead right to the buzzer with the Dragons escaping with a game-winning shot for the 78-77 victory. John Sutherland was named All-NSIC first team, with Mohamed Kone adding second team accolades. Dalton Albrecht, Sutherland, RJ Smith, Colton Roderick and Jayce Lowman were named to the NABC Honors Court. Lowman, Albrecht, Sutherland and Roderick all earned NSIC All-Academic honors during the winter term.

In 2021-22, Boschee coached the Beavers to an 8-17 record overall and 5-16 record in NSIC play to finish seventh in the NSIC North Division. During the season, senior Derek Thompson broke the program's career rebound record with his 695th rebound of his career to surpass Steve Vogel (1975-78) as the program's career rebounding leader. Following the season, Tyler Behrendt, Cody Landwehr, Derek Thompson, Dalton Alcrecht and Wyatt Olson were named to the NABC Honors Court while all five and Steele Senske were named NSIC All-Academic Selections and Landwehr, Olson and Thompson named NSIC All-Academic Team of Excellence members.

During a shortened season due to COVID-19, Boschee and the Beavers went 7-9 overall and 6-8 in conference games during the 2020-21 season. BSU closed out the final six games of the regular season 5-1 to finish fifth in the NSIC North Division standings. The Beavers opened the season with a 74-59 win at Minnesota State University, Mankato and closed it with a 109-85 win over the University of Minnesota Crookston, which included a single-game record of 45 points scored by senior forward Derek Thompson. Thompson earned his second career selection to the All-NSIC Second Team and also earned NSIC North Division Player of the Week following his record-setting weekend against UMC. Thompson and senior guard Griffin Chase each earnd their third career selections to the NSIC All-Academic Team while junior forward Cody Landwehr was selected to the NSIC All-Academic Team for the second time.

The Beavers continued its trek back to the top of the NSIC after finishing the season 14-13 overall and 11-11 in conference play following the 2019-20 season. BSU opened its season with back-to-back 100-point games for the second time in program history and began the conference season with a 5-2 record over the first seven games. Included in the Beavers' hot start to the NSIC schedule was a 75-73 win over No. 21 Augustana at BSU Gymnasium. BSU also ended the season hot while taking six wins over its final seven regular-season games, including an 83-76 win over (RV) University of Minnesota Duluth. Senior forward Logan Bader and junior forward Derek Thompson each joined the 1,000-point club late in the season while junior guard Nick Wagner set the program single-season record with 80 3-pointers made. Thompson earned a selection to the All-NSIC Second Team while Wagner and senior guard Ja Morgan were named to the All-NSIC Honorable Mention Team, tying a single-season high for all-conference selections under Boschee.

Boschee brought the Beavers back to the Sanford Pentagon for the second round of the NSIC Tournament after taking down No. 1 seed Minnesota State on the road in the opening round, 66-56. The NSIC Tournament win was the first for the program since Boschee led BSU to the NSIC Championship game during the 2012-13 season. Four Beaver student-athletes were selected to the 2018-19 Winter NSIC All-Academic Team which tied the most selected to the squad under Boschee. Under Boschee's guidance, junior guard Ja Morgan recorded the second-most assists in a single season with 180, falling just three shy of tying the program record. Morgan led the NSIC in assists per game and ranked fifth in assist-to-turnover ratio. Sophomore forward Derek Thompson ranked fifth in the league in field goal percentage while sophomore guard Jacob Hoffman ranked third in three-point field goal percentage.

The 2017-18 Bemidji State squad battled injuries throughout the year and fought to a 12-16 record overall and 9-13 record in the NSIC. The Beavers finished fourth in the NSIC North standings behind six consecutive Friday wins to end the season. Senior guard Sharif Black earned All-NSIC Honorable Mention honors while leading the team in scoring, field goals, and free throws while also totaling 5.3 rebounds and 3.4 assists per game. Black ranked ninth in scoring among NSIC student-athletes during conference games. Senior Christian Pekarek became the second Beaver under Boschee to become a three-time Winter NSIC All-Academic Team member while sophomore Kyle Sorenson also earned his first nod to the NSIC All-Academic Team.

In 2016-17, Bemidji State finished with a 10-18 record overall and 8-14 mark in the NSIC to compete for a home postseason game. BSU opened its home and conference schedule with three straight wins before winning six of nine games from Jan. 7 to Feb. 3. Freshman Jai'Vionne Green set a true freshman scoring record with 454 during his first season. He finished tied for eighth in the NSIC with 16.2 points per game while graduating senior Ben Best ranked eighth in the conference with a .530 field goal percentage. Senior Shane White and junior Christian Pekarek each repeated as Winter NSIC All-Academic Team members.

The 2015-16 Beavers concluded the season with a 10-17 overall record and a 7-15 conference record. They posted a winning home record by going 8-7 at the friendly confines of the Bemidji State Gymnasium. Senior guard DJ Anderson averaged 4.9 assists per game which was the fourth-highest average in the conference. The men's basketball team had four players named to the 2015-16 Winter NSIC All-Academic Team.

The Beavers went 18-9 overall and 15-7 in NSIC play in 2013-14 to earn a share of the NSIC North Championship – its second league title in three years. BSU recorded 18 wins for the sixth time in program history and the third season in a row for the first time in 92 seasons of Bemidji State basketball. At the conclusion of the season, junior Brock Lutes (Portland, Ore.) was named Daktronics All-Central Region Second Team, NSIC Newcomer of the Year and All-NSIC First Team. Senior Zach Noreen (F, Avon, Minn.) joined Lutes as an All-NSIC First Team selection and senior forward Maxie Rosenbloom (St. Paul, Minn.) was honored as All-NSIC Second Team.

Boschee recorded the most wins by a Bemidji State first-year head coach in 2012-13, as he guided the Beavers to an 18-12 overall record. Bemidji State finished the 22-game NSIC schedule with a 13-9 mark to finish as the No. 3 seed in the NSIC North Division. The Beavers hosted their second-consecutive first-round game in the NSIC/Sanford Health Men's Basketball Tournament and made a run to the championship game – their first-ever appearance in the championship contest.

Seniors Dermaine Crockrell (Scottsdale, Ariz.) and Lance Rongstad (Eleva, Wis.) were named All-NSIC Second Team at the conclusion of the season, while Crockrell and senior Mason Walters (Milton, Wis.) were honored as All-NSIC Tournament Team members. Walters went on to play professional basketball in Germany following his career as a Beaver.

Boschee was named the 16th head coach of the Bemidji State University men’s basketball program on July 11, 2012.

Prior to taking over the BSU men's basketball program, Boschee spent nine seasons as head coach at Central College (Pella, Iowa). in 2011-12, he guided the Dutch to an 18-8 overall record and a 10-6 mark in Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (IIAC) play to finish fourth in the league standings. Producing a .500 record or better in four of the past five seasons, he compiled a 115-115 career record at Central (third all-time in wins) after inheriting a program that went 44-135 and failed to reach .500 in the eight seasons previous to Boschee stepping on campus as head coach. He led the Dutch to a 14-10 record in 2007-08, the first winning campaign in 12 seasons, before establishing a new program record for wins in a season in 2009-10. In his final three seasons, Boschee led Central to the best record in the Iowa conference compiling a record of 53-26 and 32-16 in conference play.

Boschee and the Dutch posted a 23-5 record in 2009-10 and brought the first outright IIAC championship to the Central campus in 25 years. In addition to the league championship, the squad made its ninth appearance in the NCAA Division III tournament after winning the program’s first-ever IIAC Tournament Championship. At the conclusion of the season, Boschee was rewarded for his efforts and was named coach of the year in the IIAC, Iowa Basketball Coaches Association, and D3hoops.com West Region.

Under Boschee, 17 Central student-athletes earned all-conference laurels, including a conference most valuable player, while three team members were named academic all-conference. He also recruited and guided the school’s all-time assist, 3-point, and field goal percentage leaders.  In addition, he served as an instructor in exercise science at Central.

Prior to his time at Central College, Boschee served as an assistant men’s basketball coach at Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter, Minn. from 1993-2003. During his tenure for the Gusties, the team posted NCAA Division III National Tournament bids in seven seasons, including a national runner-up performance in 2003. Gustavus totaled a 221-83 record, won four conference tournaments and two regular-season conference championships during Boschee’s 10 seasons in St. Peter. He also served as the women’s golf coach from 1995-2003 and guided the Gusties to their first national tournament appearance in 2003. He was named women’s golf coach of the year by the Minnesota Women’s Collegiate Golf Association (MWGCA) in 1998 and by the conference in 2000 and 2003. Boschee also served as a instructor in the Department of Health and Exercise Science at Gustavus.

Boschee earned a Master of Arts in teaching at Northern State University in Aberdeen, S.D. in 1993. During his graduate work, he served as a graduate assistant for a men’s basketball team that won the 1992-93 Northern Sun Conference Championship and finished as National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) National Runners-up.

A 1991 graduate of the University of North Dakota, Boschee earned his bachelor’s degree in recreation management. During his undergraduate career, he was a four-year letter winner for the UND men’s basketball team, where he played for former BSU head men’s basketball coach Dave Gunther (1995-2001) and BSU Athletic Hall of Fame member Rich Glas. He earned all-conference and all-region honors as a student-athlete while captaining a squad that earned conference and regional championships, en route to a third-place finish at the NCAA Division II National Tournament in 1990. He finished his career among the top 10 in scoring with 1,103 points and still remains in the top 25. Boschee hit 199 three-point field goals, which is still fourth on the all-time list in total made threes. He hit 95 threes in each of his junior and senior seasons. Boschee still holds the career free throw percentage record with an 88.0 percent clip from the line and still has the most consecutive made in a row with 45. The 1989-90 men’s basketball team was inducted into the UND Athletic Hall of Fame in 2009.
