Beavers Fall to Winona State in Three Games

WINONA, Minn. - The Bemidji State University volleyball team's offense was stymied Friday as the Beavers collected a meager 30 kills while hitting just .091 in a three-game loss (32-30, 30-19, 30-24) at Winona State University.

Given a steady diet of matches versus the Beavers this year Winona State could have one of the best records in the conference. For some reason WSU brings out the worst in BSU. In 2004 the Warriors have compiled just three NSIC wins with two of those coming as three-game sweeps over BSU.

The Beavers had the wind taken out of their sails early. After battling the Warriors to extra points in game one, the team was edged out 32-30. BSU could never recover dropping the second game 30-19 and losing game three by the score of 30-24.

Senior Heather Haugen (Lanesboro, Minn.) totaled the team's best kill output with 11. Freshman Brittney Burns (Henderson, Minn.) was close behind with nine kills but was the Beavers most consistent offensive player hitting for a .231 hitting percentage (9k-3e-26att).

Defensively, the team was led senior Kristine Engman (Virginia, Minn.) a defensive specialist who collected a match-high 14 digs.

The BSU net play was one of the positive aspects of the match. Junior Christa Anderson (Siren, Wis.), freshman Brittney Carlson (New Prague, Minn.) and Haugen each posted four blocks as the team collected 12 on the evening.

Winona State was led by Molly Horihan's match-high 13-kill performance. Lisa Dobie ran the Warrior offense for the setter position collecting 37 assists. while a handful of WSU players reached double digits defensive save totals.

Bemidji State is 10-19 overall and 3-10 in NSIC play this season. The team will wrap up the 2004 regular season Tomorrow with a 3:00 p.m. match at No. 4 Concordia University-St. Paul.
