Beavers Downed 5-0 versus North Dakota in Home Opener

BEMIDJI, Minn. -- The Bemidji State University soccer team played host to the NCC’s University of North Dakota, in what was BSU’s first home game of the 2005 slate. The Beavers were unable to capitalize on opportunities and had a goal disallowed because of an offsides call in a 5-0 loss to the Fighting Sioux.

Although the Beaver defense had played well in the first two games of the season, only allowing one goal, UND found some holes right from the start. In the tenth minute, North Dakota’s Shannon Murphy struck a ball that sailed over the head of Beaver goalkeeper Kari Torgerson (Jr.; New Hope, Minn.).

The Fighting Sioux’s Jenna Barr picked up the only other goal of the first half on a ball that Torgerson got a glove on, but was unable to corral.

To start the second half, the Beavers made a quick break down the left side and sent a cross in front of the net for what appeared to be a goal. But, a BSU player was ruled offside and the goal disallowed by the referee.

From that point on, Barr made her presence felt with three more goals over a span of 14 minutes. She would finish the game with eight points.

BSU’s Torgerson faced a barrage of shots nabbing 12 saves in the contest. The Beaver offense, on the other hand, was stifled most of the contest as they were only able to put three shots on net.

Afterward, Bemidji State Head Coach Jim Stone commented on the match. “I wasn’t really dissappointed with our play. I saw some things in the second half that we did well that we can take with us the rest of the season.”

The Beavers are next in action on Thursday, September 1, 2005 at the Advantage Emblem Cup in Duluth, Minn. There they will take on St. Scholastica in what is the first of a six-game road trip. BSU is 4-4-1 all-time versus St. Scholastica, and are unbeaten in four of the last five meetings.
