BSU Rides Big Second Half to Win over Northern State, 3-1

BEMIDJI, Minn. - After giving up the game’s first goal, Bemidji State University notched three unanswered scores, including two in the second half to take a 3-1 victory over Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference rival Northern State at the BSU Soccer Field. Jessica Ploeger (Jr., D, Oak Grove, Minn.) scored the game-winner on a header from a Danielle Egeberg (Fr., M, New Hope, Minn.) corner kick.

After Northern State’s Melissa Gamble squirted free in the 24th minute to beat BSU goalkeeper Kari Torgerson for the game’s first goal, the Beavers wasted no time finding the net on their own.

Just 49 seconds and one possession later, the NSIC leading scorer Kelly Hyvare (So., F, Coon Rapids, Minn.) got a feed from teammate Megan Wallner (Jr., M, Bemidji, Minn.) and hit a rocket past NSU’s keeper, Theresa Alexander. Hyvare’s goal erases her own single-best total of nine goals from last season in just the 13th game of the year.

The score remained tied until Ploeger’s picture-perfect goal in the 52nd minute. After the Beavers forced a corner kick on the Wolves end of the field, Egeberg lofted a high, arching kick to the far post and Ploeger flew in to drill a header into the back of the net. The goal was the first points of the season for the defender.

BSU added an insurance goal in the 80th minute when Hyvare ripped a shot off of Alexander and Jamie Ford (Fr., F, Edina, Minn.) one-timed the rebound into the open net. The goal was Ford’s fifth of the season, along with Hyvare’s fourth helper.

Torgerson was perfect in the second half, keeping NSU to just one goal in the game. She made nine saves in the contest, which moved her into fifth place on the NCAA all-time career saves list.

The win improves BSU’s record to 7-5-1 overall and 3-2-0 in the league and puts the Beavers on a three-game unbeaten streak.

Next up for Bemidji State is NSIC-newcomer University of Mary on Sunday, Oct. 8 at 1 p.m. Mary (N.D.) joined the NSIC this year after competing in the NAIA’s Dakota Athletic Conference.
