- The Bemidji State University volleyball team were swept
by the Northern State Wolves at the BSU Gymnasium, three games
to none. With the win the Wolves extend their win streak over
the beavers to six matches and complete the season series
sweep of the Beavers. Northern State earned the three game
sweep by scores of 30-28, 30-20, and 30-25.
Northern State used 17 more kills and three less errors than
the Beavers to earn the win. Northern State also out hit the
Beavers in the match as the Wolves hit .145 (52k-28e-165at)
while the Beavers hit .076 (35k-25e-132at). The Beavers are
now 2-7 when having less kills than their opponents and are
0-3 when hitting below .100 in a match this season.
Brittney Burns (Sr., OH, LeSueur, Minn.)
led the Beavers attack with 11 kills hitting at a rate of
.241 (11k-4e-29at) and
Nicole Olson (Fr.,
OH, Baudette, Minn.) was close behind as she finished the
match with nine kills hitting .259 (9k-2e-27at) in the match.
Jennifer Janckila (Jr., MB, Appleton, Wis.)
tied a career-high with five blocks (3bs-2ba).
Brie Groskreutz (So., OH, Reedsburg, Wis.) led the
Beavers in digs for the eleventh time this season as she recorded
22 digs in the match.
Alicia Beaman (Sr.,
S, St. Paul Park, Minn.) and Burns also recorded double-digit
digs. Burns had 12 digs in the match while Beaman recorded
10. With the twelve digs Burns eclipsed 1,000 digs in her
career and joins Peggy Hammel-Moran and Diane Glampe as the
only BSU players to record 1,000 kills and 1,000 digs in a
career.
Allison Kunde (So., S, Burnsville, Minn.)
paced the Beavers for the eighth time this season with 21
assists. Beaman chipped in with 10 assists. Burns and Beaman
each recorded double-doubles in the match as Burns recorded
her sixth double-double of the season and the 31st of her
career while Beaman also garnered her sixth double-double
of the season and her 36th of her career.
The Wolves were paced offensively by Kelsey Aden who recorded
a match-high of 14 kills, hitting at a rate of .238 (14k-4e-42at).
Stephanie Nygaard recorded 20 digs to lead the Wolves defensively,
while Kelsey Aden controlled the net with five blocks (0bs-5ba).
Megan Gilbraith recorded a match-high of 48 assists along
with 10 digs, she was the lone Northern State player to record
a double-double.
In a back-and-forth contest, which saw a total of 21 tie scores
and nine lead changes the Wolves from Northern State were
able to pick up the points when it counted. In game one the
Wolves jumped out to a 3-0 lead but the Beavers battled back
and forced the Wolves to take a timeout when the score was
6-5 in
favor of BSU.
Bemidji State pushed its lead to as large as four points at
13-9 and held the lead all the way up to when the score was
tied at 23-23. Behind the serving of Heather Galich the Wolves
pushed the score to 28-25 and never looked back as they took
game one 30-28. Game two the Beavers held the lead at 2-0
but that was the only time they would lead as the Wolves tied
the match at 2-2 and then coasted to a 30-20 game two win
going into the intermission.
Game three both teams came out swinging as they both hit their
highest percentage of the match. BSU hit .273 (14k-5e-33at)
in game three while Northern State hit .240 (20k-8e-50at).
Game three saw the majority of the lead changes as their were
15 tie scores and six lead changes throughout the game. The
Beavers and Wolves traded points for much of the game until
the Wolves pushed ahead at took a 19-22 lead forcing the Beavers
to take a timeout. After the timeout the Wolves pushed its
lead to 25-20 and was able to cruise to a 30-25 win for the
game and the match.
The loss drops the Beavers record to 8-10 overall and 4-8
in the NSIC. The eight wins is the most wins since 2004 when
the Beavers had ten wins.
With the loss to the Wolves the Beavers fall to 31-23 all-time
versus Northern State. The loss drops BSU’s record to
13-8 all-time versus the Wolves at the BSU Gymnasium.
Bemidji State (8-10; 4-8 NSIC) will be back in action on Wednesday,
Oct. 17 when the Beavers will travel to St. Paul, Minn. to
take on the Concordia-St. Paul Golden Bears at 7:00 p.m. from
the Gangelhoff Center.
