No. 5 Huskies upend the Beavers, 4-2

Box Score

BEMIDJI, Minn. (Sanford Center) -- After leading No. 5 Michigan Tech 2-1 deep into the second period, the fifth-ranked Huskies scored three unanswered goals to defeat the Bemidji State University men's hockey team, 4-2, Saturday evening at Sanford Center. Nate Arentz and Brendan Harms tallied goals for BSU.

BSU opened the scoring at 7:10 of the first period when Arentz buried a rebound from the doorstep for his team-leading fifth goal of the season.

The 1-0 lead would last until the 9:28 mark of the second period when Reid Sturos would make good on the first of two MTU power-play goals, but Harms and the Beavers would answer 2:19 later with a power-play bullet from the top of the slot to put BSU up 2-1.

Tyler Heinonen sent the teams to the second intermission locked in a 2-2 game when he lit the lamp as an MTU power-play was expiring with 1:34 left in the second.

The Huskies took the wind out of the Beavers' sail just 45 seconds into the third stanza when Alex Petan capped an odd-man rush with his fifth goal of the season.  From that point on, the Beavers carried play, posting a 14-9 advantage in shots on net, but the MTU defensive effort, led by goaltender Jamie Phillips, was impenetrable.

The Huskies added an empty-net goal with just 19 seconds to play to stretch their lead to 4-2.

Special teams were again the difference, as the Huskies converted two of four man-advantage opportunities. Although, BSU broke through for a power-play goal, it was 1-for-5 and could not convert on its final two opportunities when trailing, 3-2.

BSU out shot the Huskies for the second consecutive night, totaling 35 shots on goal to MTU's 23.

Andrew Walsh took the loss for the Beavers making 19 saves, while allowing three goals. His record dips to 1-4-0 in 2014-15.

Following the loss the Beavers fall to 3-7-0 overall and 2-4-0 in Western Collegiate Hockey Association action.
